Running through every unit are seven course themes, including cultural and intellectual development, states and institutions of power, economic and commercial development, technological and scientific innovation, social organization, national and European identity, and Europe's interaction with the wider world. Our notes walk through each unit with these themes in mind, helping you build connections across the full sweep of European history.

Question 2

Where should I start with AP European History revision?

Accepted Answer

Starting with AP European History can feel overwhelming given how much ground the course covers, but our notes organize everything across 9 chronological units from the Renaissance (c. 1450) all the way to contemporary Europe, so you always know exactly where you stand in the timeline.

We'd suggest taking a quick look at the exam format first: the MCQ section carries 40% of your score, the DBQ 25%, the SAQ 20%, and the LEQ 15%, so understanding what each section asks of you helps you revise with real purpose from day one.

From there, working through our notes unit by unit is a solid starting point, since each unit builds context for the next and every unit carries an equal 10–15% exam weighting, meaning no single period can be ignored.

As you work through the content, keep the seven course themes in mind (including States and Other Institutions of Power, Economic and Commercial Developments, and Technological and Scientific Innovation), since the College Board uses these themes to frame questions across all nine units.

Building in spaced retrieval as you move through each unit helps the big-picture patterns stick across the full 1450-to-present timeline, which is exactly what the LEQ and DBQ reward.

Question 3

What's on the AP European History exam?

Accepted Answer

The AP European History exam covers European history from approximately 1450 to the present, testing you across four question types that reward both content knowledge and historical thinking skills.

| Section | Topics covered | Length | Weighting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Multiple Choice (MCQ) | All 9 units (c. 1450–present) | 55 min | 40% |
| Short-Answer Questions (SAQ) | All 9 units (c. 1450–present) | 40 min | 20% |
| Document-Based Question (DBQ) | All 9 units (c. 1450–present) | 60 min (incl. 15 min reading) | 25% |
| Long Essay Question (LEQ) | All 9 units (c. 1450–present) | 40 min | 15% |

Seven course themes run across all nine units, including cultural and intellectual developments and states and institutions of power, so you'll notice the same threads reappearing across very different time periods. Our notes walk through each unit's content and source-analysis skills, so we'd suggest building your content knowledge there first, then using spaced retrieval to keep earlier units fresh as you progress through the course.

Question 4

Can I use these notes as my AP European History textbook?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Our notes cover all 9 units of AP European History, walking you through everything from the Renaissance and Exploration to Cold War and Contemporary Europe, so they make a strong study companion for the whole year. That said, the AP exam includes a Document-Based Question (DBQ) and a Long Essay Question (LEQ) that reward deep engagement with primary sources and extended historical argument, which a full textbook can help you build alongside our notes. We'd suggest using our notes to consolidate key concepts, chronology, and the seven course themes, then reaching for a textbook when you want to go deeper on a period or practice analyzing primary sources.

Question 5

How do I score a 5 in AP European History?

Accepted Answer

Scoring a 5 in AP European History means demonstrating mastery of both content and the six historical thinking skills across all four question types: MCQ (40%), SAQ (20%), DBQ (25%), and LEQ (15%).

A score of 5 is labeled "extremely well qualified" by College Board, and while the exact composite score required shifts year to year, in practice it usually looks something like this:

- Strong content knowledge across all 9 units, from the Renaissance through Contemporary Europe
- Confident use of the three reasoning processes (Comparison, Causation, and Continuity and Change) in your free-response answers
- Precise sourcing and contextualization in the DBQ, going beyond simply describing documents to explaining their significance
- A clear, historically defensible thesis in both your DBQ and LEQ, backed by specific and relevant evidence
- Regular review of our notes to keep each unit's key developments fresh, so you can retrieve and apply evidence confidently on exam day
