Question 1

When should I start doing AP Chemistry past papers?

Accepted Answer

We'd suggest starting past-paper practice early rather than saving everything for the final weeks before your May exam. As you complete each of the 9 units, work through released free-response questions on that topic to test yourself while the content is still fresh. This kind of pre-testing primes your brain to retain the material more deeply than re-reading notes alone.

For the final weeks, save 2–3 full papers so you can experience the real format: Section 1 is 60 MCQs in 90 minutes and Section 2 is 7 free-response questions in 105 minutes. Our exam practice on Cognito is organized by topic, so you can build steadily through the units before shifting to those full mock runs as the exam approaches.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

Working through as many released Free-Response Questions as you can get your hands on is one of the most effective things you can do in the lead-up to May, because the FRQ section rewards a very specific style of written justification that takes practice to get right.

College Board releases past FRQs publicly on AP Central (with roughly a one-year lag), so there is a solid bank to work through across both the short and long free-response question types. Our exam practice on Cognito is organized by topic, so if a particular unit is a weak spot, you can target that area directly rather than sitting full papers from the start.

We'd suggest beginning with topic-level free-response questions while you're still building content knowledge, then moving to full timed practice closer to your exam date so you get used to managing both the MCQ and FRQ sections in one sitting.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Working through past papers with timing in mind is one of the most valuable things you can do in the final stretch of AP Chemistry revision, and we'd suggest building up to it gradually rather than starting cold.

Section 1 gives you 90 minutes across 60 multiple-choice questions, and Section 2 gives you 105 minutes for 7 free-response questions, so developing a feel for that pace genuinely matters. We'd suggest getting comfortable with the content and question styles through our notes and exam practice first, using active recall to strengthen your retention, before moving into timed attempts. That way, the clock is testing your exam technique rather than exposing gaps in your chemistry knowledge.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

A low mark on a past paper is genuinely useful information, because it shows you exactly where to focus next.

We'd suggest working through your answers question by question to identify which units cost you the most marks, then revisiting those topics in our notes and flashcards before attempting another paper. Keep in mind that Unit 3 (Properties of Substances and Mixtures) carries the highest exam weighting at 18–22%, and Unit 8 (Acids and Bases) follows at 11–15%, so gaps in those areas tend to have the biggest impact on your overall score.

For Section 2 (the free-response questions), it's worth comparing your answers against the College Board's released scoring guidelines on AP Central to see exactly which parts of your reasoning were incomplete. One technique that works especially well at this stage is active recall: after re-reading a topic in our notes, close them and try to write out everything you remember before checking back. Our by-topic view makes it straightforward to target the specific units where you dropped marks, so you can build confidence one area at a time.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the AP Chemistry mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

Marking your Section 1 MCQs is straightforward since each of the 60 questions is simply right or wrong, so you can check your answers quickly against the answer key. For Section 2, College Board publishes official scoring guidelines alongside each set of released free-response questions on AP Central, breaking every question into individual scoring points so you can work through each part methodically.

We'd suggest reading the full scoring guideline before looking back at your answer, as FRQ rubrics often accept a range of equivalent phrasings and it's easy to undersell your own work if you skim them. Our exam practice on Cognito is organized by topic and question type, so once you've identified a weak area from your marking, you can focus your revision there straight away.
