Question 1

When should I start doing AP Art History past papers?

Accepted Answer

Starting past-paper practice early in the year is a smart move, but we'd suggest approaching it in two phases. Use our by-topic exam practice to work through released free-response questions and MCQs as you cover each of the 10 content areas, building familiarity with the question styles alongside the content itself.

Then, in the final weeks before the May exam, save two or three full papers to use as mocks, so you experience the full rhythm of 80 MCQs in 60 minutes followed by 6 free-response questions in 120 minutes. This way your mocks feel genuinely representative and you're not exhausting your practice material too soon.

With 250 required works to know across AP Art History, spaced retrieval through our flashcards and by-topic questions is what builds the depth you need before moving to full-paper mode.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

There's no fixed number to aim for, but we'd suggest working through released free-response questions from as many past years as you can find, spacing them out across your revision rather than saving them all for the end. College Board publishes past FRQs on AP Central (usually with a one-year lag), so that's the best public source to start from. Because the exam divides evenly between 80 multiple-choice questions and 6 free-response questions (including both long essays and short-answer responses), we'd suggest practicing both formats to build confidence in each. Our exam practice can help you get comfortable with the question styles before the real thing.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Timing yourself on practice papers is genuinely useful for AP Art History, because the free-response section asks you to write 6 responses in 120 minutes and pacing is a real challenge if you haven't thought about it beforehand. We'd suggest getting confident with the 250 required works and the three core skills first, then moving to timed practice so you can feel out how long to spend on each essay type. Our exam practice tools can help you build that fluency before you take on a full mock.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

A low mark on a past paper is genuinely useful feedback, not just a setback. We'd suggest going through each question you got wrong and working out whether the gap is in your knowledge of the works themselves or in applying the three AP Art History skills: Visual/Contextual/Comparative Analysis, Attribution, and Art Historical Interpretation.

For the multiple-choice section, our notes and flashcards can help you revisit whichever of the 10 content areas felt weakest. For the free-response questions, it's worth checking whether your answer was targeting the specific skill the question asked for, since the exam is built around those three analytical frameworks.

We'd also suggest spaced retrieval: coming back to the topics you got wrong across several separate sessions, rather than all at once, helps the content stick far more effectively than a single long review.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the AP Art History mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

For the MCQ section (Section 1, 80 questions), marking is simple: each question has one correct answer, so you can check your responses directly against the released answer key. For the free-response section (Section 2, which includes 2 long essays and 4 short-answer questions), College Board releases official scoring guidelines alongside past FRQs on AP Central, and those rubrics are your best guide for evaluating your own written answers.

When you work through the rubric, pay close attention to how it maps onto the three skills the course assesses: Visual/Contextual/Comparative Analysis, Attribution, and Art Historical Interpretation. Our notes and exam practice on Cognito are structured around these same skills, so they can help you understand what a strong response looks like before you compare your work to the official guidelines.
