Question 1

When should I start doing OCR A-Level Religious Studies past papers?

Accepted Answer

Starting past-paper questions early, topic by topic, is far more valuable than saving everything until the weeks before your exams. As you work through each area of Philosophy of religion, Religion and ethics, and your chosen Developments in religious thought component, we'd suggest using our exam practice to test yourself on that topic straight away. This kind of spaced retrieval helps ideas stick much more effectively than a last-minute cram.

Save two or three full past papers for the final weeks of revision to build your timing and stamina across all three 2-hour papers. Your school mocks are a great natural checkpoint, so we'd suggest completing at least one full paper ahead of them to feel the pressure of the real thing before it counts.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

Doing past papers regularly across all three components (Philosophy of religion, Religion and ethics, and your chosen Developments in religious thought paper) is genuinely valuable preparation for H573, and since first exams were in 2018 there are several past series available through OCR to work through. We'd suggest prioritising quality over quantity: reading the mark scheme carefully after each attempt builds your feel for levels-of-response marking far more effectively than rushing through papers without reflecting on where your answers could improve. Our exam practice on Cognito is designed to help you get comfortable with the extended-essay question styles before you move to full papers, so you can make the most of every past paper you do tackle.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Doing past papers under timed conditions is one of the best ways to build real confidence for OCR A-Level Religious Studies. Each of the three papers is a 2-hour written exam worth 120 marks, so practising with the clock running helps you develop the pace and stamina these extended-response essays demand.

We'd suggest working through our notes and building your knowledge first, then moving into timed practice once you feel comfortable with the content. Our exam practice questions are a great way to build up gradually before tackling full papers. Pre-testing, where you attempt questions before you feel fully prepared, is also worth trying because it primes your brain to notice gaps and consolidates what you already know.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

A low past paper mark is genuinely useful diagnostic information, not just a disappointing score, so we'd encourage you not to move on too quickly. We'd suggest looking at where the marks were lost: was it content you didn't know well enough, or was it exam technique in building a well-structured, evaluative argument?

OCR uses levels-of-response grids to reward the quality of your reasoning, so even solid knowledge needs to be shaped into a critical, balanced response to reach the higher levels. Our notes walk through the key thinkers and arguments for each topic, and our exam practice helps you see how those ideas should be applied under exam conditions. We'd suggest revisiting the relevant topic using active recall (close your notes and write down everything you can remember) before working through another question on the same area to track your improvement.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the OCR mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

OCR marks Religious Studies essays using Levels of Response grids, which means you are judging the quality of argument, analysis, and use of scholarly views rather than simply ticking off factual points. When you open the mark scheme, read each level descriptor carefully and decide which band your answer fits before you look at the mark range.

A common mistake is awarding yourself credit based on content alone. The descriptors reward how well you construct a critical argument and how effectively you draw on scholarly views, academic approaches and sources of wisdom and authority, so be honest with yourself about whether your response genuinely earns a higher level or just sits comfortably in the middle of the band below.

Our exam practice includes worked examples that help you calibrate these judgements, and our notes walk through the scholarly views OCR expects you to engage with across all three papers.
