When should I start doing Pearson Edexcel A-Level Religious Studies past papers?

Starting earlier than you might think gives you a real advantage with Pearson Edexcel Religious Studies, and our exam practice makes it straightforward to build this in from the very start of your course. We'd suggest working through topic-by-topic questions as you finish each area of content across your chosen papers, so you get comfortable with the extended essay and structured question formats well before revision season. Tackling questions on Philosophy of Religion, Religion and Ethics, and your Study of Religion component as you go is far more valuable than saving everything until April. In the final few weeks before your May/June exams, we'd suggest moving to full practice papers, completing around two or three across your three chosen components so you can build pacing and stamina across a full two-hour sitting. If your school runs mock exams, treat those as your first proper full run-through and use any feedback to shape your priorities in the weeks that follow. This pattern, using our exam practice by topic steadily throughout the year and full papers near the end, is a form of spaced retrieval that helps both the content and the essay skills stick.

How many past papers should I do?

There's no fixed number that works for every student, but working through past papers systematically is one of the best ways to prepare for 9RS0's three 2-hour papers. Since Edexcel first examined this specification in 2018, there are several series available across Philosophy of Religion, Religion and Ethics, and your chosen Study of Religion option. We'd suggest using our exam practice questions by topic first to build confidence, then moving to full papers as your exam approaches. Reviewing each paper carefully afterward using the mark scheme is where spaced retrieval really pays off, helping you spot which topics keep tripping you up across different years.

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Yes! Working through past papers under exam conditions is one of the most effective things you can do in the final weeks of revision, especially for a qualification like this where extended writing is central to every paper. Each 9RS0 paper runs for 2 hours, so practising with that time limit helps you develop a sense of pacing across all three sections. We'd suggest consolidating the content with our notes and flashcards first, then using our exam practice to work through questions by topic before attempting a full timed paper. When you do complete a full paper, read the mark scheme carefully afterwards and focus on where your arguments could be deepened or better structured. That reflective step is where spaced retrieval really pays off: returning to the topics where you lost marks a few days later helps the ideas stick far more effectively than simply re-reading your notes.

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

A low mark on a past paper can feel discouraging, but it's genuinely one of the most useful pieces of feedback you can get at this stage. We'd suggest working through your answers question by question to identify which topics cost you the most marks, then heading back to our notes to rebuild your understanding in those areas before attempting another paper. For Edexcel Religious Studies, the extended essay questions reward the accurate selection and deployment of specialist language alongside the ideas of named scholars, so if your Section C responses felt underdeveloped, that's a particularly productive area to focus on. Our flashcards can help you embed key scholar arguments using spaced retrieval, and our exam practice lets you target those weaker topics specifically before you return to a full paper.

How do I mark my own past paper using the Pearson Edexcel mark scheme?

Marking your own work is one of the most useful things you can do in RS revision, and the Pearson Edexcel mark schemes are genuinely readable once you know how to use them. Download the mark scheme from Pearson's qualifications website alongside your past paper, or use the Sample Assessment Materials document, which includes sample mark schemes, and note that each paper is out of 80 marks across Section A (structured / extended-response questions), Section B (a two-part essay on an excerpt from the anthology), and Section C (an extended essay). For the extended writing sections, the mark scheme rewards the selection and deployment of specialist language alongside the quality of your argument, so read the descriptors carefully and work through your response point by point. Pearson also publishes marked exemplars of student work with examiner commentaries, which are genuinely helpful for calibrating how your answers compare to real exam responses. Our exam practice on Cognito is a great companion here, helping you see what a well-structured answer looks like before you go back and assess your own.
