Question 1

When should I start doing AQA A-Level Religious Studies past papers?

Accepted Answer

Starting past-paper practice earlier than you think is one of the most rewarding steps you can take for AQA Religious Studies, and we'd suggest beginning with topic-by-topic questions as soon as you've worked through each area in class, whether that's the cosmological argument, situation ethics, or sources of wisdom and authority in your chosen religion. This kind of spaced retrieval, returning to each topic shortly after learning it and then again a few weeks later, helps the ideas stick far better than leaving everything until the revision period. Our exam practice is organised by topic, so it's straightforward to pick up the right questions at the right time throughout the year.

Then, in the weeks leading up to your May/June exams, we'd suggest reserving 2–3 full practice papers so you have fresh material when it matters most and can build stamina across both 3-hour components. If your school runs mock exams, treat those as a genuine opportunity to get comfortable with the extended writing demands of the longer AO2 questions before the real thing.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

Working through past papers is one of the most valuable things you can do in the lead-up to your A-Level exams, and AQA Religious Studies has been running this specification since 2018, so there are several series of material available to you. We'd suggest treating them as an active recall tool rather than passive reading: attempt a question fully, then compare your response against the mark scheme and examiner's report to see exactly where your argument could be sharper or better evidenced. Our exam practice section lets you work through questions by topic, which is a great way to target weaker areas before moving on to full papers as your exams approach.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Timed practice is genuinely valuable for AQA Religious Studies, especially because each paper runs for 3 hours and asks you to manage your time across different question types and formats. We'd suggest building up to it though: use our notes and active recall tools to consolidate the content first, then work through individual questions using our exam practice before attempting a full paper against the clock. The 25-mark synoptic questions in the Dialogues sections reward sustained, well-structured argument, and getting comfortable with those in timed conditions helps you feel much more settled on exam day. Our by-topic view is great for spotting areas that need more attention before you commit a full three hours to a practice paper.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

A low mark on a past paper is useful diagnostic information, not a verdict on where you'll end up. We'd suggest starting by going through the mark scheme question by question to spot whether your weaker answers fell on the AO1 parts (knowledge and understanding) or the AO2 parts (analysis and evaluation), as the two-part question structure in both components makes this straightforward to separate out.

Since AO2 carries approximately 60% of the overall marks, gaps in your ability to analyse and evaluate arguments tend to hurt more than gaps in content knowledge alone. Our notes walk through the key scholarly views and arguments you need for strong AO2 responses, and our exam practice lets you work through more questions so you can build that evaluative skill. AQA's examiners' reports (available on their website at aqa.org.uk/7062) are also worth reading alongside the mark scheme, as they explain exactly where students tend to lose marks across the papers.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the AQA mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

Marking your own work carefully is a genuinely useful revision habit for AQA Religious Studies. Download the relevant mark scheme from aqa.org.uk/7062, then identify which assessment objective each question targets: in the two-part questions, the first part tests AO1 (knowledge and understanding) and the second part tests AO2 (analysis and evaluation). For the unstructured 25-mark synoptic questions in Component 2, both AOs are in play across your whole response, so read the mark scheme descriptors for each objective separately before settling on a mark. AQA also publishes examiners' reports at aqa.org.uk/7062, and reading those alongside the mark scheme is often more illuminating than the mark scheme alone, as they explain what distinguished stronger responses from weaker ones in a real exam series. Our exam practice on Cognito is designed to help you build the AO1 and AO2 skills the mark scheme rewards, so you will find it easier to judge your own work honestly once you have spent time there.
