When should I start doing OCR (Spec B - Advancing Physics) A-Level Physics past papers?

Starting past-paper practice early gives you a real edge in OCR Advancing Physics (H557), and our by-topic view makes it straightforward to build this into your studying from the very beginning of the course. We'd suggest working through past-paper questions topic by topic as soon as you finish each section of content, so you get comfortable with the way OCR phrases questions on areas like quantum behaviour, capacitors, and gravitational fields long before exam season. As your mocks approach, you can start combining topics and tackling longer stretches of questions across all three components. We'd then suggest saving two or three full papers for the final weeks leading up to the May/June series, so you experience the real pacing of each component under realistic conditions without burning through your best practice material too soon.

How many past papers should I do?

There's no fixed number of past papers that works for every student, but working through as many as you can in the weeks before your exams is one of the most effective ways to prepare for OCR Advancing Physics H557. Since this is a linear course with all assessment at the end, past papers give you the chance to practise across all three written components (01, 02, and 03) in one go, which is exactly how the real exams will feel. Our exam practice is organised by topic, so if a paper reveals a gap in your understanding, you can go straight to targeted questions to address it rather than re-reading everything. We'd suggest spreading papers across your revision period rather than saving them all for the final fortnight, so you have time to review your answers and act on what you find.

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Yes! Working through past papers in timed conditions is a valuable part of H557 revision, and we'd suggest building towards it progressively rather than jumping straight in. Our exam practice tools let you work through questions topic by topic first, which helps you feel confident with the content before you tackle a full paper. When you're ready to go fully timed, it's worth planning your sessions around the actual paper lengths: Component 01 and Component 02 are each 2 hours 15 minutes, and Component 03 is 1 hour 30 minutes. The 'Advancing Physics' context-led style means questions often place familiar physics into unfamiliar real-world settings, so regular timed practice helps you get comfortable working through those scenarios efficiently.

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

A low mark on a past paper is useful information, not a verdict on your ability. We'd suggest going through each question you dropped marks on and asking whether it was a content gap, a misread of the question, or a maths slip, since the fix is different in each case. For content gaps, our notes and flashcards can help you revisit those areas of the H557 spec before you return to exam practice. For questions where you understood the physics but lost marks on phrasing, our by-topic exam practice lets you focus on how OCR Advancing Physics questions are worded and what the mark scheme is looking for. Spaced retrieval helps here too: revisiting those weak areas a few days after your initial review, rather than immediately, tends to help the content stick.

How do I mark my own past paper using the OCR (Spec B - Advancing Physics) mark scheme?

Self-marking a past paper works best when you treat the mark scheme critically rather than generously. For OCR H557, mark schemes are published on OCR's website alongside each paper; download the correct mark scheme for the paper you attempted before you start checking. For extended-response questions, OCR uses a levels-of-response approach, where your answer is placed in a band based on the overall quality of your reasoning rather than a point-by-point checklist. Read each level descriptor carefully and be honest about which band genuinely fits your response, rather than crediting yourself for partial matches. It is also worth noting that Component 02 (Scientific literacy in physics) includes an Advance Notice article, so make sure you are using the matching paper and mark scheme from the same year. Our exam practice on Cognito covers all three components (Component 01 at 110 marks, Component 02 at 100 marks, and Component 03 at 60 marks), which helps you recognise the question styles the mark scheme tends to reward before you attempt a full paper.
