Question 1

How do I know if I've properly learned a topic in Physics?

Accepted Answer

The best sign that a topic has stuck is whether you can retrieve it without prompts, not just recognise it when you read it. Our quizzes use active recall to test exactly that: if you can answer questions cold, without looking at your notes, that's a strong signal you've genuinely learned the material rather than just familiarised yourself with it.

For OCR A-Level Physics, we'd suggest checking yourself at three levels: can you recall the definitions and equations, can you explain the underlying physics in your own words, and can you apply those ideas to unfamiliar exam-style problems? Our exam practice is a great final check, since OCR papers draw on ideas from across all six modules, and handling those cross-topic questions fluently shows your understanding has real depth.

Question 2

How often should I quiz myself when revising A-Level Physics?

Accepted Answer

Regular self-quizzing is one of the most powerful revision habits you can build for OCR A-Level Physics, and spaced retrieval research gives us a clear steer on timing. The idea is to quiz yourself shortly after studying a topic, then return to it at increasing intervals over the following days and weeks; each retrieval attempt strengthens the memory trace far more than re-reading your notes would.

Our quizzes are organised by topic, so we'd suggest working through a short quiz after each study session, then revisiting the same topic a few days later before moving on. Quizzing frequently across multiple topics, rather than leaving long gaps between sessions, is what makes the knowledge stick over time.

Question 3

Should I do a quiz before or after reading the notes?

Accepted Answer

Pre-testing, which means attempting a quiz before you've read the notes, is a research-backed technique that can prime your brain to absorb new material more deeply when you do read it. That said, if a topic on this OCR A-Level Physics course feels completely new to you, we'd suggest skimming our notes first so you have a foothold before quizzing yourself.

For most topics, a blended approach tends to work well: read our notes to build understanding, use our quizzes to spot the gaps, then return to the notes to fill them in before quizzing again. That back-and-forth between reading and testing is what really helps the content stick over time.

Question 4

What's the difference between Cognito's quizzes and the actual exam questions?

Accepted Answer

Our quizzes are built for active recall, which means they're designed to test one concept at a time and give you instant feedback as you work through a topic. They're great for building confidence with the core content across all six modules of H556 before you move on to more demanding material.

OCR's actual exam questions tend to be longer and more applied, often asking you to combine ideas from different parts of the specification (all three papers include synoptic assessment). You'll also encounter multi-step calculation chains, graph interpretation, and practical analysis questions that go well beyond a quick-fire quiz format.

We'd suggest using our quizzes to check and reinforce your understanding topic by topic, then moving to our exam practice when you're ready to work through the style of questions you'll face in the real papers.
