Question 1

When should I start doing OCR A-Level Physical Education past papers?

Accepted Answer

Starting sooner than you might think pays off with H555, because the three written papers cover physiology, psychology, and socio-cultural content across separate components with a lot of detail to consolidate. We'd suggest using our by-topic view to work through past-paper questions on each topic as you finish it during the course, since this kind of spaced retrieval helps the content stick far better than leaving it all to the final term.

As you approach your mocks and then the final weeks before the May/June exams, we'd suggest shifting to two or three full papers so you get a feel for the pacing and structure of each component. Our exam practice makes it straightforward to spot which areas still need attention and go back over them before exam season begins.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

Working through past papers is one of the most effective forms of exam practice for OCR A-Level PE, and the honest answer is: as many as you can fit into your revision schedule. Since H555 has three separate papers (Physiological factors, Psychological factors, and Socio-cultural issues), we'd suggest completing each paper as a distinct unit and reviewing your answers carefully against the mark scheme.

Our exam practice on Cognito lets you work through questions by topic first, which is a great way to build confidence before you tackle a full paper. Spacing your attempts across several weeks rather than doing them all at once makes retrieval practice far more effective for long-term retention.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Practising with the clock running is one of the most valuable things you can do for OCR A-Level PE, because the three written papers vary in length (Component 01 is 2 hours; Components 02 and 03 are 1 hour each), and building a feel for that pacing before the real thing makes a genuine difference.

We'd suggest starting with content revision first, then moving to timed practice once you feel confident with the material. That way you're testing genuine exam skills rather than papering over gaps in knowledge.

Our exam practice lets you work through questions by topic, so you can build up to full timed paper attempts gradually, using spaced retrieval along the way to strengthen what you've already covered.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

A low mark on a past paper is useful diagnostic information, showing you exactly which topics or question types need more attention before your H555 exams. We'd suggest checking whether your weaker answers fall under knowledge and recall (AO1), application to scenarios (AO2), or analysis and evaluation (AO3), since OCR weights all three across the three written components.

For extended response questions in particular, OCR expects you to draw together knowledge from more than one topic area, so our notes can help you see how concepts across physiology, psychology, and socio-cultural studies connect. Once you know where the gaps are, using spaced retrieval (returning to the same topic over several sessions rather than in one sitting) helps the content stick, and our exam practice gives you more questions to build confidence with.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the OCR mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

Marking your own past paper takes practice, but it is one of the most effective ways to understand exactly what OCR expects from your answers. The three written papers each contain a mixture of objective response, short and medium length answers, and extended response items, so your approach needs to vary by question type.

For shorter factual questions, award marks only where your answer clearly matches a specific point in the mark scheme, and resist the urge to give yourself credit for vague or half-formed points. For extended response questions, the marks are integrated into the marking criteria, so read the whole descriptor for each level and judge your response holistically rather than ticking off individual bullet points.

Our exam practice on Cognito walks you through what a strong answer looks like, which helps you calibrate your self-marking before you check the official OCR mark scheme.
