When should I start doing Pearson Edexcel A-Level History past papers?

The most effective approach is to start using past-paper questions as soon as you've finished your first topic, rather than waiting until the spring. Our exam practice lets you work through questions by topic throughout the year, which is a form of spaced retrieval practice that helps the content stick far better than a last-minute cram. As you build coverage across papers 1, 2 and 3 (plus the coursework component), keep that topic-by-topic habit going. Then, in the final few weeks before the May/June series, we'd suggest setting aside 2–3 full papers to work through in one sitting, ideally after your school mocks have shown you where the gaps are. Mocks are a genuinely useful checkpoint: they reveal which parts of the breadth study, depth study or thematic paper need more attention before the real thing.

How many past papers should I do?

Working through past papers is one of the most valuable parts of your History revision, and the honest answer is: as many as you can manage without sacrificing content review. We'd suggest starting with our by-topic exam practice to build confidence question by question, then moving to full papers once you feel solid on the content. Since 9HI0 papers have been running since 2017, there are several years' worth to work through across all three examined papers. Our exam practice section lets you filter by paper and topic, so you can focus on the question types that challenge you most before tackling whole papers.

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Past papers are most valuable when you use them in the right order, so the question is a smart one to ask early. We'd suggest getting comfortable with the content and mark scheme first, then shifting to timed practice as you move closer to the exams. For Edexcel A-Level History (9HI0), papers 1 and 3 each run for 2 hours 15 minutes and paper 2 runs for 1 hour 30 minutes, so building a genuine feel for that pace matters a lot. Once you feel ready to time yourself, pre-testing (attempting a question cold before reviewing your notes) primes your recall and pinpoints gaps far more efficiently than re-reading alone. Our exam practice is organised by topic so you can work through individual question types before taking on a full paper.

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

A low mark on a past paper is genuinely useful information, not a cause for alarm. The first step we'd suggest is working through the mark scheme carefully to see exactly where your answer fell short, whether in your knowledge and understanding of the period (AO1), your source analysis and evaluation skills (AO2), or your ability to analyse and evaluate historical interpretations (AO3). Once you know which area let you down, you can target your revision much more precisely. Our notes and flashcards are great for filling content knowledge gaps, while our exam practice helps you get more comfortable with the specific question styles across each paper. We'd also suggest trying spaced retrieval: rather than re-reading the same material, test yourself on those weaker topics a few days later to check what has genuinely stuck.

How do I mark my own past paper using the Pearson Edexcel mark scheme?

Self-marking with the Pearson Edexcel mark scheme takes some practice, but it's one of the most valuable things you can do with a past paper. Download the mark scheme directly from Pearson's website alongside the question paper, then read the level descriptors carefully rather than looking for a word-for-word match to your own response. Edexcel A-Level History marks your answers against three Assessment Objectives: AO1 (knowledge and understanding of the period), AO2 (source analysis and evaluation, examined in papers 2 and 3), and AO3 (analysis and evaluation of historical interpretations, examined in papers 1 and 3). Ask yourself honestly which level descriptor best fits the quality of your argument and the depth of your supporting evidence, then use that judgement to identify where to focus your revision. Our exam practice and notes can help you see what a well-constructed response looks like, so your self-marking becomes more calibrated over time.
