When should I start doing Cambridge International (CIE) A-Level History past papers?

Starting past papers early in the course is one of the most effective approaches for CIE A-Level History (9489). We'd suggest using our by-topic view to work through past-paper questions on each section as you finish it during the year, which helps you build the source skills needed for paper 1, the causal explanation style of paper 2, the interpretations approach of paper 3, and the depth-study analysis required by paper 4. Then, in the final weeks before your exams, we'd suggest setting aside two or three full sittings across all four papers so you can practise managing your time across the 1 hour 15 minute and 1 hour 45 minute formats. Your school mocks are a great checkpoint for this: if you've been working through topic questions steadily throughout the year, you should feel ready to take on a full paper well before mock season arrives. Our exam practice on Cognito organises questions by topic, so you can build that habit from the very first unit rather than saving everything for the end.

How many past papers should I do?

Working through past papers is one of the most effective revision strategies for CIE A-Level History (9489), and we'd suggest aiming to work through every paper you can find. Since first exams only ran from 2021, the available bank is smaller than for some other qualifications, so it is also worth making full use of CIE's specimen papers alongside the real ones. Our exam practice on Cognito is organised by paper and topic, so you can target the question types that feel less confident before tackling full papers. Spacing your practice attempts across your revision period helps the content stick through spaced retrieval, rather than saving them all for the final week.

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Timing your practice is worth building up to gradually rather than starting every session against the clock. We'd suggest getting comfortable with the content and essay technique first, using our notes and flashcards to build your knowledge, then trying questions without time pressure before moving to full timed runs. When you do go timed, the real exam durations are a useful guide: Papers 1 and 3 are 1 hour 15 minutes each, and papers 2 and 4 are 1 hour 45 minutes each. Our exam practice section lets you work through questions by topic first, which is a good stepping stone before attempting a complete paper at full pace. Pre-testing yourself on a topic before reviewing the notes can also prime your recall, so mixing untimed and timed practice tends to serve most students well.

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

A low mark on a past paper is genuinely useful information, not just a disappointment, because it shows you exactly where to focus your energy next. We'd suggest starting by working out which paper let you down and why, since the four papers test quite different skills. Paper 1 and paper 3 lean heavily on source analysis and historian interpretations (AO3 and AO4), while papers 2 and 4 reward substantiated factual knowledge and analytical judgement (AO1 and AO2). If source or interpretation questions are the issue, our notes walk through how to approach those skills; if it's the essay papers, our flashcards can help you build the factual depth those questions need. We'd also suggest using active recall when revisiting content: close your notes, write down everything you remember about a topic, then check what you missed. Our exam practice questions let you apply that knowledge in a lower-stakes way before returning to full papers.

How do I mark my own past paper using the Cambridge International (CIE) mark scheme?

Self-marking a CIE History (9489) past paper is most useful when you treat the mark scheme as a diagnostic tool, not just a way to add up marks. For each answer, identify which assessment objectives the question is targeting: Paper 1 is weighted heavily towards AO3 (source analysis), papers 2 and 4 towards AO1 (knowledge) and AO2 (analytical judgement), and paper 3 towards AO1 and AO4 (interpreting historians' approaches). The command words are also worth checking before you compare your answer to the mark scheme; 'assess' and 'evaluate' require an informed judgement, while 'explain' needs clear reasons supported by evidence, so make sure your answer is doing what the command asks. Our notes walk through the demands of each paper type so you know what a strong response looks like, and our exam practice lets you build that skill before marking your own work against the scheme.
