Question 1

When should I start doing OCR A-Level Geography past papers?

Accepted Answer

Starting past-paper practice earlier than you might expect is one of the best approaches for OCR A-Level Geography. We'd suggest using topic-by-topic questions as soon as you finish each section of the course, whether that's Landscape Systems, Global Connections or any of your chosen Geographical debates topics.

This kind of spaced retrieval throughout the year helps the content stick far better than saving everything for a revision burst. Then, in the final few weeks before your May/June exams, we'd suggest setting aside two or three full papers (covering all three written components) to build your stamina and time awareness across the different paper lengths.

Your school mocks are a great natural checkpoint: aim to have solid topic-by-topic question practice done before mocks, and use the mock sitting itself to identify which topics need more attention. Our exam practice on Cognito is organised by topic, so you can work through questions at exactly the right moment in your studies.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

There's no single number that works for every student, but the aim should be to work through as many past papers as you can across all three components before your exams. OCR A-Level Geography has three written papers (Physical Systems, Human Interactions, and Geographical Debates), so we'd suggest spreading your past paper practice across all of them rather than focusing only on the ones you feel most confident about.

Our exam practice tool lets you work through questions by topic first, which is really useful earlier in revision when a full paper feels overwhelming. As your exams get closer, spacing out full past papers across different weeks helps you benefit from spaced retrieval, meaning the content has more chance to stick between sessions.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Practising past papers in timed conditions is genuinely valuable for OCR A-Level Geography (H481), and we'd suggest building up to it gradually rather than starting there. We'd recommend beginning with untimed question practice to build confidence, then moving to full papers within the actual time limits: 1 hour 30 minutes for Physical Systems and Human Interactions, and 2 hours 30 minutes for Geographical Debates. This is a form of spaced retrieval practice that helps your brain recall knowledge under pressure, which is exactly what the exams will demand. Our exam practice is organised by topic, so you can focus on weaker areas first before working through complete papers.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

A low mark on a past paper can feel disheartening, but it is genuinely useful information rather than a verdict on your ability. We'd suggest going through the mark scheme question by question to identify exactly where marks were lost, since that turns a disappointing score into a targeted revision list. Our by-topic view makes it easy to return to the specific content you found tricky, whether that is in Physical Systems, Human Interactions, or Geographical Debates. Once you have refreshed that content, spaced retrieval is a great technique to help it stick: come back to similar questions a few days later rather than re-reading the same material immediately. Our exam practice gives you plenty of fresh questions to build your confidence from there.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the OCR mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

OCR's mark schemes for H481 include commentary on marking and sample answers alongside the marks themselves, so the self-marking process is more guided than you might expect. For shorter, point-based questions, we'd suggest going through each bullet point in the mark scheme and crediting yourself honestly for each one you've hit. The longer extended-response questions on this spec use a levels-of-response approach, meaning you match your answer against descriptor bands rather than counting individual points, so it's worth reading each level descriptor carefully and deciding which band your response most closely fits. Our exam-practice section includes examples of high-scoring answers across all three papers, which gives you a useful benchmark when you're unsure which level to award yourself.
