Question 1

When should I start doing Pearson Edexcel International A-Level Geography past papers?

Accepted Answer

Weaving past-paper practice into your revision from the moment you finish each unit is one of the most effective approaches with this modular qualification. Because Pearson Edexcel International A-Level Geography offers two exam series each year (January and June), there are natural checkpoints throughout the course where topic-by-topic questions can sharpen your understanding as you go, rather than leaving everything until the end.

Our exam practice lets you filter by topic, so you can work through relevant past questions unit by unit and get early feedback on any gaps. Then, in the final two to three weeks before your exams, we'd suggest saving two or three full papers to work through in one sitting, which builds the stamina and pacing you will need on the day. Treating your school mocks as a dress rehearsal for this full-paper phase is a great way to make sure that active recall habit is already embedded before the real thing.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

There's no single target number, but the more paper practice you do for each unit, the more familiar you'll become with the question styles and timing. Since this qualification uses a modular structure with two exam series each year (January and June) and first exams from 2017, there's a healthy bank of past papers available to work through for each unit. Our exam practice is a great starting point, we'd suggest using it unit by unit to identify where your weaker areas are, then moving on to official past papers to build your confidence with the full range of question types. Spreading your paper practice across several weeks using spaced retrieval, rather than saving it all for the final few days, gives you time to review your responses properly and revisit any content gaps before the exam.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Practising under timed conditions is one of the most useful things you can do in the run-up to your exams, because the exam hall can feel very different from studying at home.

Each unit has its own duration to get comfortable with: Unit 1 runs for 1 hour 45 minutes, Unit 2 and Unit 4 each run for 1 hour 30 minutes, and Unit 3 runs for 2 hours. We'd suggest working through our by-topic exam practice first to build confidence with the question styles, then moving on to full papers where you can focus on pacing yourself across all sections. Pre-testing yourself on questions before you feel completely ready is also worth trying, as research shows it primes your brain to absorb content more effectively when you review your answers afterwards.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

A low mark on a past paper is genuinely useful diagnostic information rather than just a disappointing score, so we'd suggest treating it as a roadmap for what to focus on next.

Work through the mark scheme carefully to identify which questions cost you marks, then group those losses into two categories: content gaps (geography you didn't know well enough) and exam-skill gaps (content you understood but couldn't express in the format the question needed). For content gaps, our notes and flashcards are a great place to go back and consolidate the material before attempting another paper.

For exam-skill gaps, our exam practice questions let you work through individual question types with targeted practice, which tends to help more than re-reading notes alone. Building spaced retrieval into your routine here pays dividends: revisiting those weak topics at short intervals over the following days helps the knowledge stick far better than one long session.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the Pearson Edexcel International A-Level mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

Pearson Edexcel publishes mark schemes alongside past papers on their website, and reading through them carefully is one of the most effective revision habits you can build for this qualification. For the extended writing in this specification, mark schemes use levels-of-response descriptors, so your goal when self-marking is to match your response against each level description and judge honestly where your answer sits, rather than hunting for individual bullet points.

Pay close attention to the command words used in each question, as the specification includes a command word taxonomy that signals the exact depth and style of answer expected at each point. Our exam practice on Cognito shows you what strong responses look like, which makes self-marking much more accurate and helps the feedback stick.
