Question 1

When should I start doing AQA A-Level Geography past papers?

Accepted Answer

Starting past-paper practice earlier than you might expect gives you a real advantage with AQA A-Level Geography.

We'd suggest using topic-level questions from our exam practice as soon as you've finished each unit, whether that's water and carbon cycles, global systems and global governance, or any of the other content areas, so you build exam confidence gradually rather than waiting until revision season.

Then, in the weeks leading up to your May/June exams, we'd suggest reserving two or three full-length papers for full timed practice, given that paper 1 and paper 2 each run to 2 hours 30 minutes and pacing yourself across that time is something you want to build confidence with before exam day.

Your school mocks are a great dress rehearsal for this final stage, but the more targeted topic-level practice you've done earlier in the year, the more you'll get out of that mock experience.

Spaced retrieval through past-paper questions spread across the year is one of the most evidence-backed ways to build lasting knowledge in geography.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

Working through past papers is one of the most effective ways to prepare for AQA A-Level Geography, and we'd suggest aiming to complete every available paper at least once. The specification has been running since first exams in 2018, so there is a solid bank of papers across both paper 1 (Physical geography) and paper 2 (Human geography) to work through. Quality matters as much as quantity, so we'd suggest reviewing mark schemes closely after each attempt and using spaced retrieval to revisit any topics that catch you out. Our exam practice and by-topic view can help you target those gaps as you go.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Both papers are 2 hours 30 minutes long, so building a genuine feel for that pace really matters.

With extended prose and levels-of-response questions making up a significant chunk of each paper, you need to practise writing at speed as much as you need to know the content. We'd suggest getting comfortable with the material topic by topic first, then working through timed practice as your confidence grows.

Our exam practice questions let you build up gradually before you commit to a full-length paper. Using spaced retrieval across past papers over time will help the style and timing feel natural well before the real exams arrive.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

Getting a low mark on a past paper can feel discouraging, but it's one of the most useful pieces of feedback you can get before the real thing. We'd suggest going through the AQA mark scheme question by question to pinpoint exactly where marks were lost, because the papers use a mix of short-answer questions, levels-of-response questions, and extended prose, and each type rewards a different kind of answer.

Once you know which question types or topics are letting you down, we'd suggest revisiting those areas in our notes before attempting similar questions again. Spaced retrieval tends to work well in this situation, since returning to your weak spots across several shorter sessions helps the content stick far more than a single long review. Our exam practice lets you work through more questions by topic, so you can keep building confidence in the areas that need it most.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the AQA mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

Marking your own work is genuinely valuable for active recall, because the gap between what you wrote and what the mark scheme rewards shows you exactly where your geographical knowledge needs more attention. On AQA Geography (7037), the mark scheme handles different question types in different ways: short-answer questions have point-based answers, while the longer questions use a "levels of response" approach, where you judge which level descriptor best matches your answer rather than counting individual points.

For levels-of-response questions, we'd suggest reading each level descriptor carefully and placing your answer in the level that genuinely reflects what you wrote, not the one you were aiming for. Our exam practice includes worked examples that show how the mark scheme applies to real answers, which makes self-marking much more reliable.
