When should I start doing OCR (Spec A) A-Level Further Mathematics past papers?

Starting topic-by-topic past-paper questions as early as possible is a really effective approach for OCR (Spec A) A-Level Further Mathematics, even in the first few months of the course. Our by-topic view makes it easy to find questions on complex numbers, matrices or differential equations right after you've covered them in class, so you're testing yourself while the content is fresh. We'd suggest saving full papers for the final weeks before your exams, using two or three as proper mocks to build your stamina and timing across all four 90-minute papers. Our exam practice section has past papers organised so you can move naturally from topic-level work to full-paper preparation, including both your Pure Core papers and whichever optional areas your school has chosen. This pattern, sometimes called spaced retrieval, means you're revisiting content at regular intervals throughout the year rather than leaving everything to a last-minute push.

How many past papers should I do?

Doing past papers is a great way to consolidate your understanding of OCR Further Maths A (H245), and we'd suggest working through as many full sets as your schedule allows, spread across all four papers in your chosen pathway. The qualification has 4 papers per exam series, each worth 25% of your total grade, so it's worth giving equal attention to both mandatory Pure Core papers (Y540 and Y541) and your two chosen option papers. Our exam practice tool lets you filter by paper and topic, so you can use active recall on the areas you find trickiest before moving on to full paper practice. A spaced retrieval approach, returning to earlier papers after a gap, tends to help the content stick far more than working through everything in one go.

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Yes! Timed practice is genuinely valuable in Further Maths, and building up to it gradually is a really sensible approach. Each of the four OCR papers runs for 90 minutes and carries 75 marks, so developing a feel for that pace before exam day helps a lot. We'd suggest starting with our exam practice to work through questions by topic first, then moving to full papers against the clock once you feel confident with the content. The OCR spec rewards clear, methodical written working, so timed practice helps you build that habit alongside your speed.

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

A low score on a past paper is frustrating, but it gives you really precise information about where to focus your revision next. We'd suggest going through each question you dropped marks on and identifying whether the issue was a content gap, a working slip, or a misread of a command word (OCR uses terms like "prove", "show that" and "hence" with very specific meanings that are worth understanding clearly). For any content gaps, our notes walk you through all the Pure Core topics and the optional areas, so you can revisit the relevant section before tackling similar questions again. Studying the mark scheme alongside your own working is also valuable, since this qualification rewards detailed analytical methods and correct mathematical notation, meaning a model solution often reveals exactly where a method broke down. Once you've reviewed the weaker areas, we'd suggest using active recall on those topics before returning to a fresh paper rather than immediately re-attempting the same one.

How do I mark my own past paper using the OCR (Spec A) mark scheme?

OCR mark schemes for H245 reward correct method as well as correct answers, so the most important habit when self-marking is to read each mark-scheme point against your working, not just your final answer. Pay close attention to the command word used in each question, because OCR's spec defines these precisely. Questions saying "Show that" or "Prove" require every step to be visible, so award yourself the marks only if your working covers the full chain of reasoning. Questions saying "Find", "Solve" or "Calculate" do not require justification, meaning a correct answer from efficient calculator use can earn full credit. "Give", "State" and "Write down" questions need no working at all. Where a question includes the instruction "In this question you must show detailed reasoning", OCR is explicit that a calculator-produced answer alone earns no marks, so be strict with yourself there. Also check that you simplified your final answer fully (for example, combining logarithms or cancelling surds), since the spec states that simplification is expected even when not explicitly asked for. Our exam practice questions on Cognito include worked solutions that show exactly the level of detail OCR expects, which makes a useful benchmark when you are unsure whether your own working is sufficient.
