Question 1

When should I start doing OCR A-Level English Literature past papers?

Accepted Answer

Starting past-paper practice early in the year gives you a real advantage, and we'd suggest working through individual topic-by-topic questions as soon as you've covered each text or skill in class. Our exam practice resources let you work through questions on Shakespeare, pre-1900 drama and poetry, and the comparative and contextual study topics as you go, so each area gets tested while it's fresh.

As your mocks approach, stepping up to longer stretches of practice helps you build the stamina needed for the two 2 hour 30 minute closed-text papers OCR sets. We'd then suggest saving two or three full timed papers for the final weeks before the May/June series, when you can use them to check your pacing and bring everything together across all three components.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

There's no magic number, but working through papers for both Component 01 and Component 02 is a solid approach, since those are the two written exams in H472. We'd suggest starting with our exam practice to build confidence on individual question types first, then moving to full past papers once you feel comfortable with your set texts and how the assessment objectives are being tested. Spacing your paper practice out over several weeks rather than doing them all at once helps each round of feedback sink in properly. Our by-topic view can help you spot the areas that need more attention between papers.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Working through past papers is one of the most valuable things you can do for both Component 01 and Component 02, each of which is a 2-hour 30-minute closed-text paper worth 40% of your A-level. Practising to time builds the stamina and pacing you'll need on the day, and the closed-text format means you have to work fluently from memory without your texts in front of you, so getting used to that pressure early really helps the content stick. We'd suggest starting by working through individual questions without a clock first, so you can focus on building the quality of your literary analysis and argument, then moving to full timed attempts once you feel confident with the material. Our exam practice walks you through the question types for each component so you can see exactly what's expected before you commit to a full run-through.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

A low past paper mark is genuinely useful information, and we'd suggest treating it as a diagnostic tool rather than a verdict on your ability. The most important first step is to work through the OCR mark scheme carefully, comparing your response against the level descriptors for each assessment objective (AO1 to AO5) to pinpoint exactly where marks were dropped.

Once you've identified the gap, for example whether it's in close analysis of language and form (AO2) or in demonstrating understanding of context (AO3), you can go back to our notes on that specific area to rebuild your understanding before attempting another question. Our exam practice lets you apply that targeted work in focused bursts rather than redoing a full paper straight away.

A technique that works well at this stage is spaced retrieval: wait a day after re-reading the relevant notes, then try to reconstruct your argument from memory before checking back. That intentional gap is what helps new knowledge stick over the long term rather than fading before the real exams.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the OCR mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

OCR's mark schemes for H472 use a levels-based, best-fit approach rather than awarding a point per correct answer, so your job is to find the level descriptor that most closely matches your response as a whole. Each component is assessed against a combination of the five assessment objectives (AO1 to AO5), and the weightings differ by component and question, so it's worth checking which AOs matter most for the specific question you've attempted before you start judging your work.

We'd suggest reading the level descriptors from the top down and asking yourself which level gives the overall best fit for your answer, rather than looking for a perfect match against every bullet point. Once you've settled on a level, place yourself within its mark range based on how convincingly you've met the descriptors. Our exam practice includes worked examples that show what a strong response looks like, which can really help you calibrate your judgement before you apply it to your own answers.
