Question 1

When should I start doing Pearson Edexcel A-Level English Literature past papers?

Accepted Answer

Starting past-paper practice earlier than you might think is a genuinely good idea for this qualification, though the way you use papers should shift as the year progresses. We'd suggest using our exam practice to work through topic-by-topic questions on each component as you finish studying it, so you're steadily building familiarity with the kinds of essay questions Pearson Edexcel set across Drama, Prose, and Poetry.

Then, as your mock exams approach and again in the final weeks before May/June, we'd suggest saving two or three full papers to work through under closer-to-exam conditions. This two-phase approach means you spend most of your revision actively engaging with the texts and question styles, and then sharpen your timing and stamina right when it counts.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

There isn't a fixed number to aim for, but working through past papers for each of your three components (Drama, Prose, and Poetry) is one of the most effective preparation strategies available. Because Edexcel 9ET0 is text-specific, the papers most valuable to you will be those featuring questions on your own studied texts, so we'd suggest prioritising those first.

Our exam practice helps you target questions by component, making it straightforward to focus your revision where it counts most. We'd also suggest treating each paper as a dialogue with the mark scheme: write a response, then compare it carefully to understand what shifts an answer from Level 3 to Level 4 or Level 5. Quality of engagement with the feedback matters more than sheer volume of papers completed.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Practising with real past papers is one of the best ways to prepare for Edexcel A-Level English Literature, and developing a feel for the time pressure is a big part of that. All three written papers are open book, meaning you can bring clean copies of your texts into the exam, but you still need to manage your reading, planning, and writing time carefully within the set durations (2 hours 15 minutes for Drama and Poetry, and 1 hour 15 minutes for Prose). We'd suggest starting with untimed attempts on individual questions to build your confidence with the depth and style of response expected, then moving to full timed runs as your exams get closer. Our exam practice includes past-paper-style questions to help you build that stamina gradually, so you're not hitting the real thing cold.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

A low mark on a past paper is genuinely useful feedback, and the most productive response is to treat it as a diagnostic tool rather than a measure of where you'll end up.

We'd suggest going through the mark scheme and identifying which Assessment Objectives you lost marks on. This qualification assesses five distinct objectives across the papers, from articulating a personal response (AO1) and analysing how meanings are shaped (AO2), through to exploring context (AO3), making connections across texts (AO4), and engaging with different interpretations (AO5), so a low mark often points to a specific skill gap rather than a general one.

Once you've spotted the pattern, use our notes to revisit the relevant content and our exam practice to target that objective directly in your next attempt. Spaced retrieval helps here too: try recalling your arguments and critical readings from memory before you check your notes, since that active effort is what helps understanding stick more durably over time.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the Pearson Edexcel mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

Marking your own English Literature paper is more interpretive than science marking, but the Pearson Edexcel mark scheme gives you a clear structure to work with. Download the official mark scheme from Pearson's website alongside your past paper, and look for the level descriptors tied to each question's Assessment Objectives.

The "best fit" approach is central to how Edexcel marks this subject: read through the level descriptors, decide which level most closely matches your response as a whole, then settle on a mark within that band based on how convincingly you meet each descriptor. It helps to identify which AOs each question is testing before you start (for example, the Shakespeare essay in the Drama paper assesses AO1, AO2, AO3 and AO5), so you can check your response against each one in turn.

We'd suggest annotating your essay as you read, flagging moments where your argument clearly hits a descriptor and moments where it falls short. This kind of active recall helps the feedback stick far better than simply reading a mark scheme passively. Our exam practice on Cognito is a great companion here, helping you see what well-structured responses look like before you apply the mark scheme to your own work.
