Question 1

When should I start doing AQA Specification A A-Level English Literature past papers?

Accepted Answer

Starting past-paper practice early, on a topic-by-topic basis, is one of the most effective ways to build the extended essay skills this course rewards. We'd suggest using our exam-practice questions as you work through each text or component across the year, so you're regularly forming a critical argument under some pressure long before May arrives.

Then, save two or three complete papers for the final weeks of revision once you've covered all your texts across paper 1 and paper 2. Your mock exams are the ideal moment to benchmark how well you're managing time across the longer essay questions, and to see which sections still need the most attention before the real thing.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

Working through past papers for both paper 1 (Love through the ages) and paper 2 (Texts in shared contexts) is one of the best ways to sharpen your extended-response skills, and we'd suggest covering as many as you can find time for rather than targeting a fixed number.

Building your content knowledge first with our notes and flashcards, then using past papers to test yourself through active recall before checking mark schemes carefully, tends to be the most effective sequence. AQA publishes past papers and mark schemes at aqa.org.uk/7712, and our exam practice is a great way to build essay technique question by question before you move on to full papers.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Working through past papers in realistic conditions is one of the most effective things you can do as your AQA A-Level English Literature A exams approach, because the extended essay format rewards students who can pace themselves and sustain analytical writing over a long sitting.

Paper 1 runs for 3 hours and paper 2 for 2 hours 30 minutes, so building that writing stamina genuinely counts. We'd suggest using earlier papers as open practice first, focusing on planning strong comparative arguments and checking your responses against the mark schemes, before moving to full timed attempts closer to the exam. Our exam practice can help you build up section by section before you commit to a full run.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

A low mark on a past paper is a really useful signal rather than a verdict on your ability, so the best thing to do is treat it as a diagnostic tool. We'd suggest going back through the mark scheme and the AQA examiner reports to pinpoint which of the five assessment objectives (AO1–AO5) your response was weakest on: for instance, AO2 asks you to analyse how meanings are shaped, AO3 covers the significance of context, and AO4 focuses on connections across texts.

Once you've identified the gap, our notes can help you strengthen the underlying content and literary analysis, while our exam practice lets you work through further questions with the mark scheme alongside you. Using spaced retrieval to revisit key textual details tends to help the material stick far more reliably than re-reading alone.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the AQA Specification A mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

AQA's mark schemes for English Literature A use a levels-of-response approach, meaning you match the qualities of your answer to band descriptors rather than ticking off specific content points. All five assessment objectives (AO1–AO5) are assessed in every exam question, so when you read the mark scheme, look at how each band describes the quality of your argument (AO1), your analysis of authorial methods (AO2), your use of context (AO3), your connections across texts (AO4), and your engagement with different interpretations (AO5).

We'd suggest downloading the examiners' report alongside the mark scheme from aqa.org.uk/7712, since AQA also publishes example student answers with senior examiner commentaries, which are the most useful tool for calibrating your own judgement about which band your essay sits in. Our exam practice can help you build a feel for what strong responses look like before you try to place your own work.
