Question 1

When should I start doing Pearson Edexcel A-Level English Language past papers?

Accepted Answer

Starting past-paper practice early, topic by topic, is a really effective approach for 9EN0. As you work through Language Variation, Child Language and Investigating Language across the year, we'd suggest using our exam practice to test each area with real exam-style questions rather than waiting until revision season. Working this way means the analytical frameworks and terminology stick far more deeply than a last-minute push ever could.

For Component 3, it's worth noting that the subtopic pre-release happens on 1 December before your exams, so that's a natural point to sharpen your exam-style practice on your chosen investigation topic. We'd then suggest saving two or three full past papers for the final weeks before May/June, ideally after your mock exams, so you get a realistic feel for the paper timings (2 hours 15 minutes for paper 1, 1 hour 15 minutes for paper 2, and 1 hour 45 minutes for paper 3). Use your mock feedback to spot which components need more attention, and let our notes and exam practice help you fill those gaps in the run-up to the real thing.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

Working through past papers across all three examined components is one of the most effective preparation strategies, and we'd suggest spreading them out across your revision rather than saving them all for the end.

For 9EN0, that means building practice on paper 1 (Language Variation), paper 2 (Child Language) and paper 3 (Investigating Language), each of which has its own structure, timing and question style. It's worth noting that Component 3 uses a pre-released subtopic that changes each year, so older papers will have a different investigation focus. They are still excellent for practising the analytical skills, but keep that context in mind when judging how closely the content matches your year.

We'd suggest using our exam practice on Cognito to work through questions component by component before attempting full papers, so you can spot gaps and focus on them before the real thing.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Working through past papers with a clock running is one of the most valuable things you can do in the run-up to your exams, and our exam practice is designed to support exactly this kind of preparation.

For 9EN0, each component has a different duration: Paper 1 (Language Variation) is 2 hours 15 minutes, paper 2 (Child Language) is 1 hour 15 minutes, and paper 3 (Investigating Language) is 1 hour 45 minutes. Getting a feel for those different time pressures before exam day really helps the pacing become second nature.

We'd suggest building up gradually: try a single section first to check how long your extended responses are taking, then work up to a full paper once you feel confident. Our exam practice questions mirror the extended comparative and evaluative response style that Pearson Edexcel uses across all three components, so you're reinforcing the right habits from the start.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

Getting a low mark on a past paper points to something specific that can be fixed, not a ceiling on what you can achieve. We'd suggest going through the mark scheme question by question to see which assessment objectives you're losing marks on, since paper 1, paper 2 and paper 3 each weight AO1, AO2, AO3 and AO4 differently, and a pattern usually emerges.

Our notes and flashcards can help you go back over the content or terminology you need to strengthen, and our exam practice lets you work through those question types again with more focus. Spaced retrieval, returning to the same topic across several shorter sessions over time rather than in one sitting, is one of the most effective ways to make that revision stick.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the Pearson Edexcel mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

Pearson Edexcel's mark schemes for 9EN0 are levels-based, so the goal is to find the level descriptor that best fits your response rather than ticking off individual content points. The marking guidance recommends a best-fit approach: read through all the level descriptors, identify the band that most closely matches your answer, then decide where within that band your mark falls based on how securely you have met each descriptor.

In cases of uneven performance across the Assessment Objectives, the guidance places your answer in the band that best describes it overall, then adjusts the mark towards the top or bottom of that band depending on how well you have evidenced each descriptor. It also helps to annotate your answer as you mark, noting which AOs you addressed clearly and which need more development. Our exam practice includes worked examples to help you calibrate this levels-of-response thinking, which makes your self-marking considerably more accurate over time.
