Question 1

When should I start doing Pearson Edexcel A-Level English Language and Literature past papers?

Accepted Answer

Starting past-paper work earlier than feels comfortable is one of the smartest moves you can make for 9EL0. We'd suggest using individual past-paper questions topic by topic from early in Year 13, so you can build confidence with the kinds of comparative essay tasks and unseen analysis questions that appear in both Component 1 and Component 2. Our by-topic exam practice makes this straightforward to weave into your regular revision without it feeling overwhelming.

We'd then suggest saving two or three full timed papers for the final weeks before your May/June exams, ideally after your school mocks, when you've covered enough content to practise managing your pace across the full 2 hours 30 minutes for each component. Using spaced retrieval throughout the year by returning to past questions regularly is far more effective than working through lots of papers all at once in the final stretch.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

Working through as many past papers as you can get your hands on is a really worthwhile use of revision time for 9EL0, because both Component 1 and Component 2 are long essay-based exams (2 hours 30 minutes each) where fluency and stamina genuinely matter.

We'd suggest prioritising quality over quantity: spend time on each paper, then review your responses carefully against the mark scheme before moving to the next one. Our exam practice questions can help you build confidence between full papers, so you're not burning through every past series too early in revision.

Because first exams ran in 2017, there are several years of past papers available via the Pearson Edexcel website, which gives you a solid bank to work from as you build up.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Yes, practising past papers under timed conditions is one of the best things you can do to prepare, because both Component 1 (Voices in Speech and Writing) and Component 2 (Varieties in Language and Literature) run for 2 hours 30 minutes each and require you to produce sustained essay responses. We'd suggest getting a solid grip on your texts and analytical methods first, then moving into timed practice so you're building speed rather than still working through the basics.

It's also worth remembering that both exams are open book, so you can bring clean copies of your prescribed texts into the real exam. Practising with your texts to hand helps you get used to navigating them efficiently under pressure. Our exam practice on Cognito lets you work through past questions and then compare your responses to mark scheme descriptors, which makes for effective active recall practice.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

A low mark on a past paper is genuinely useful information, not just a bad score. Look at where the marks were lost: each question in 9EL0 is assessed against specific Assessment Objectives (AO1 through AO5), so identifying which objective you underperformed on tells you exactly what to address.

If you're losing marks on AO1 (applying linguistic and literary concepts and terminology) or AO2 (analysing how meanings are shaped in texts), we'd suggest revisiting our notes on those areas before working through more questions. Pearson uses a levels-based mark scheme where examiners choose the level that best fits your response, so reading those level descriptors alongside your answer will show you clearly which level your response sat in and what would move you up.

Our exam practice lets you focus on individual question types rather than redoing a full paper straight away, which is a more targeted way to build confidence. Returning to the same question type a few days later using spaced retrieval helps the improvement stick.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the Pearson Edexcel mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

Marking your own essays in English Language and Literature takes a bit of practice, because Edexcel uses a levels-based mark scheme rather than point-based marking. The core technique is 'best fit': read through the level descriptors, decide which level most closely describes your response, then refine your mark up or down within that level based on how securely you've met each descriptor. It also helps to remember that the mark scheme is designed to be applied positively, so you award yourself credit for what you've demonstrated rather than deducting marks for what's missing.

Our exam practice highlights which Assessment Objectives are in play for each question, since AO1–AO4 are distributed differently across the two exam papers, and keeping those in mind as you self-assess helps you be more precise. We'd suggest downloading the official mark scheme for your chosen paper directly from the Pearson Edexcel website, as the specific level descriptors for each question are published there.
