Question 1

When should I start doing AQA A-Level English Language and Literature past papers?

Accepted Answer

Starting past-paper practice earlier than you might think is a really good idea for this course. We'd suggest using individual topic-by-topic questions from early on as you work through paper 1 (Telling Stories) and paper 2 (Exploring Conflict), since spaced retrieval like this helps the analytical and language methods stick far better than leaving everything to the end.

In the final weeks before your exams, we'd recommend saving two or three full past papers so you can experience managing three hours in paper 1 and two hours thirty minutes in paper 2. Your school mocks are a great moment to put this into practice and identify any gaps while there is still time to address them.

Our exam practice on Cognito is organised by topic, so you can weave it into your revision from the very start.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

The aim with past papers isn't to reach a fixed target number but to use them as a feedback loop across both paper 1 (Telling Stories) and paper 2 (Exploring Conflict). We'd suggest starting with one full paper fairly early in your revision to pinpoint the question types and sections where you need the most work, then using our exam practice to build confidence in those specific areas before attempting another full paper. Returning to past papers at intervals throughout your revision, rather than saving them all for the final weeks, is a good application of spaced retrieval and tends to produce better results than rushing through them in one go. Our by-topic view can help you focus on particular sections between full paper attempts, so each paper you complete feels genuinely purposeful.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Timed practice is genuinely valuable for AQA English Language and Literature, where paper 1 runs for 3 hours and paper 2 runs for 2 hours 30 minutes. Both papers require sustained extended writing across multiple sections, so building your stamina and time management under realistic conditions really helps.

We'd suggest revising the content thoroughly first, then using our exam practice questions to build confidence with the question types before attempting a full paper at pace. When you review your answers, work through the mark schemes and AQA's examiner reports to see where your analysis of language choices could go deeper. That kind of active recall and reflection is what helps the feedback stick.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

Getting a low mark on a past paper can feel discouraging, but it's one of the most useful pieces of information you can get at this stage. We'd suggest starting by reading the mark scheme carefully to identify which Assessment Objectives (AO1 to AO5) your response didn't address as fully as it could.

Our exam practice resources can help you see what a stronger response looks like for each question type across paper 1: Telling stories, paper 2: Exploring conflict, and the NEA: Making connections. Once you've spotted the gap, whether it's analytical depth for AO2 or contextual understanding for AO3, we'd suggest revisiting our notes on that area before trying a similar question again.

Spaced retrieval works particularly well here: go over the content, then come back to a fresh practice question a few days later without looking at your notes, so you can see exactly how far you've moved.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the AQA mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

Marking your own AQA English Language and Literature paper takes a different approach to marking a science or maths paper, because the mark scheme uses levels-of-response marking rather than individual point-scoring. Instead of ticking off facts, you read the level descriptors for each assessment objective and decide which level best describes your answer, then award the mark range for that level.

The five assessment objectives in the spec give you a useful framework: AO1 covers integrated linguistic and literary analysis with appropriate terminology, AO2 looks at how meanings are shaped in texts, AO3 concerns the significance of the contexts in which texts are produced and received, AO4 is about connections across texts, and AO5 rewards expertise and creativity in your own writing. We'd suggest working through each AO separately rather than trying to arrive at an overall mark in one go.

AQA publishes annotated student responses with senior examiner commentaries at aqa.org.uk/7707, and reading those alongside your own attempt is one of the most effective ways to calibrate your judgement. Our exam practice on Cognito is designed to help you build that examiner's eye before you work through a full paper independently.
