Question 1

When should I start doing OCR A-Level Economics past papers?

Accepted Answer

We'd suggest starting topic-by-topic past-paper questions as soon as you've covered each area in class. That way you're testing yourself on fresh content, which is one of the best ways to lock it in, rather than waiting until everything's a distant memory.

Throughout the year, use our exam practice to drill individual topics (microeconomics, macroeconomics, themes). Then, in your final few weeks before the May/June exams, sit 2–3 full papers under timed conditions to build stamina and get a feel for the whole qualification. Your school will likely run mocks in the spring term, which is the perfect dress rehearsal.

This approach means you're practising all year, not cramming at the end, and you'll walk into the exam room feeling confident with the question styles.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

There's no magic number, what matters is practising enough different types of question that you're comfortable with every topic and exam technique. We'd suggest working through at least one full past paper for each of the three exam components (Papers 1, 2 and 3) under timed conditions, then using our by-topic exam practice to drill the areas where you lost marks. If you've got time, a second round of full papers closer to the exam helps you build stamina and confidence. Track which question types trip you up (data-response, extended essays, multiple choice in paper 3) and focus your final revision there.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

We'd suggest doing at least some under timed conditions, yes. Working through past papers with the clock running helps you build exam stamina and get a feel for how long you can spend on each question, especially useful when you've got three two-hour papers to sit. That said, you don't need to time every single one. Early on, it's often more helpful to work through papers untimed so you can focus on understanding the question types and practising your technique. Once you're confident with the content, start adding the timer to simulate exam day. Our exam practice lets you work through questions by topic first, then move to full timed papers when you're ready.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

Getting a low mark on a past paper isn't a reason to worry, it's one of the most valuable learning tools you have. The key is to treat it as a diagnostic, not a judgment. Work through the paper again and identify where you lost marks: was it understanding the content, applying economic concepts to the context, structuring your analysis, or reaching a supported evaluation? Our exam practice shows you worked solutions and mark schemes so you can see exactly what examiners were looking for.

Once you've identified the gaps, go back to our notes and flashcards to revisit the relevant topics, whether that's microeconomics (market structures, elasticity, labour markets) or macroeconomics (aggregate demand and supply, policy objectives, the financial sector). Then use our quizzes to test yourself on those areas with active recall. When you feel more confident, attempt another past paper under timed conditions and track your progress.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the OCR mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

Looking at OCR mark schemes can feel a bit cryptical at first, but here's how to make them work for you. Each question on the mark scheme shows the maximum marks available and the skills being tested (AO1 for knowledge, AO2 for application, AO3 for analysis, AO4 for evaluation). For short-answer questions, the mark scheme lists specific points you need to make, tick off the ones you included and add up the marks. For extended-response questions (the 8–25 markers), OCR uses levels-based marking: your answer is placed into a level (typically 1–4) based on how well you've demonstrated the required skills, then given a mark within that band.

We'd suggest marking yourself generously at first, it builds confidence and helps you spot what you got right. Then go back and mark more critically, focusing on where you could sharpen your chains of reasoning or add stronger evaluation. Our exam practice for OCR A-Level Economics includes model answers that show you what top-level responses look like, so you can see how examiners reward depth of analysis and balanced judgement.
