Question 1

When should I start doing Pearson Edexcel (Spec B) A-Level Economics past papers?

Accepted Answer

Many students worry they need to wait until they've finished the whole course before attempting past papers, but with 9EB0 you can start much earlier than that. We'd suggest using our exam practice questions topic by topic as you cover each section, working through questions on each of the four themes progressively, so Edexcel B's question style and demands feel familiar well before revision season.

For full papers, we'd suggest saving two or three for the final few weeks, particularly around your school mocks and then again before the May/June exams. Working through those complete 2-hour papers at that stage builds the stamina and timing that all three papers demand. Our by-topic view makes it easy to identify specific themes to focus on before stepping up to full-paper practice.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

There's no fixed number that suits every student, but working through past papers systematically is one of the most effective ways to prepare for Edexcel B Economics. We'd suggest building your content knowledge first using our notes and flashcards, then moving into full paper practice in the final weeks, ideally attempting each sitting as a complete set of all three papers so you practise managing your time across papers 1, 2 and 3. Reviewing your answers against the mark scheme straight afterwards is where the real learning happens, since that self-assessment process strengthens the AO3 analysis and AO4 evaluation skills that carry the most weight in this qualification. Our exam practice tool also lets you work through questions by topic if you want to target specific weaker areas before committing to full timed papers.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Working through past papers with a timer is one of the most valuable things you can do before your exams, because all three 9EB0 papers run for 2 hours with 100 marks each, and the extended open-response questions in Sections B and C of papers 1 and 2 demand sustained analysis under real time pressure.

We'd suggest building your content knowledge first with our notes and flashcards, then moving into timed practice once you feel solid on the themes. When you do work against the clock, pay close attention to how you allocate time across sections, especially for paper 3, which draws on all four themes and a pre-released context (with unseen stimulus material inside). Our exam practice section lets you work by topic if you want to build up gradually before attempting a full paper with the timer on.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

A low past paper mark can feel disheartening, but it's one of the most useful pieces of feedback you can get. We'd suggest going through each question you lost marks on and identifying whether the gap sits in knowledge of terms and models (AO1), applying that knowledge to the context given (AO2), analysing the economic impact on agents (AO3), or constructing a well-supported evaluative judgement (AO4). Our notes and flashcards help you patch content gaps, while our exam practice lets you focus on the specific question types where you need to build confidence. Once you've worked through the weaker areas, using active recall on the relevant themes is a great way to consolidate before returning to another paper.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the Pearson Edexcel (Spec B) mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

Marking your own economics past paper is one of the most effective ways to understand what the examiner is looking for, so it's worth approaching it carefully. We'd suggest downloading the official mark scheme directly from Pearson Edexcel's website alongside the question paper, since the two documents need to be read together. As you work through each answer, keeping the four assessment objectives in mind helps: knowledge and understanding (AO1), application (AO2), analysis (AO3), and evaluation (AO4). We'd particularly highlight the extended open-response questions, which appear in Sections B and C of papers 1 and 2, and in both sections of paper 3, since these reward sustained chains of economic reasoning that build through analysis and into evaluation rather than stopping at knowledge alone. Our exam practice includes worked examples that show you what strong responses look like, which makes it much easier to calibrate your own marking honestly.
