Question 1

When should I start doing AQA A-Level Economics past papers?

Accepted Answer

We'd suggest starting past-paper questions **as soon as you've covered a topic**, there's no need to wait until you've finished the whole course. Our exam practice lets you filter questions by topic, so you can test each section as you go. That way, you're building familiarity with AQA's question styles from the start and spotting gaps in your understanding early.

Save 2–3 **full timed papers** for the final few weeks before your exams (and for any mocks your school runs). By then you'll have the stamina and content knowledge to handle all three 2-hour papers under exam conditions. Working through individual questions earlier means the full papers feel less daunting when you get there.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

There's no magic number, but we'd suggest working through at least **two to three past papers per exam paper** (so six to nine papers total across papers 1, 2 and 3) in timed conditions before your exams. That gives you a feel for the timing, question styles and what examiners are looking for. Once you've done a few, review the mark schemes carefully, that's where the real learning happens, then tackle more if you have time. Our exam practice breaks down questions by topic, so you can target weak areas before sitting full papers.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

We'd suggest doing at least some of your practice under timed conditions, especially as you get closer to the exams. Each AQA A-Level Economics paper is 2 hours, so working within that window helps you get a feel for pacing, where to spend time, where to move on. That said, you don't need to do **every** past paper timed from the start. Early on, you might prefer to work through questions at your own speed, check mark schemes as you go, and build confidence with the content. Once you're comfortable with the material, switch to timed sittings. That's when you'll really test whether you can recall and apply what you know under pressure. Our exam practice tool lets you filter by topic and year, so you can mix both approaches, untimed topic drills first, full timed papers later.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

Don't worry, a low mark on a past paper doesn't mean you're behind. It means you've just identified exactly where to focus your revision, which is incredibly valuable.

Start by working through the paper with the mark scheme open. For every question you lost marks on, write down *why*, was it a gap in knowledge, a misunderstanding of the command word, or an incomplete evaluation? That clarity is half the battle. Then use our notes and flashcards to fill the knowledge gaps, and our exam practice to target the question types you found hardest.

If you struggled with data-response or extended essay questions, that's often about exam technique rather than content.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the AQA mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

When you're ready to mark your paper, download the mark scheme from the AQA website (search "7136 past papers"), it'll match the exact question paper you've just done. Work through your answers one by one, awarding yourself marks according to the guidance. For longer written responses (data response or essay questions), focus on the levels descriptors: AQA's mark schemes break these into levels based on the quality of your analysis, evaluation and use of context. If you've hit the higher-level descriptors, clear chains of reasoning, supported judgements, relevant real-world application, you're in the top bands.

Our exam practice tool on the pastPapers tab includes model answers and examiner-style feedback for every question type, so you can see what a strong response looks like before you mark your own. We'd suggest using the mark scheme honestly (it's tempting to be generous with yourself), then reviewing any dropped marks with our notes to fill the gaps.
