When should I start doing Cambridge International (CIE) A-Level Computer Science past papers?

Our exam practice works best when it's woven in from the start of your course, not left until the final few weeks. We'd suggest using topic-by-topic past-paper questions as soon as you've covered each area of the syllabus, whether that's data representation, networks, or algorithm design, so you're applying knowledge while it's fresh. This kind of spaced retrieval builds understanding much more effectively than a single cramming sprint closer to your exams. As you approach the final weeks, we'd suggest saving two or three full papers to use as mocks, which helps you build pacing and confidence across all four papers before the real thing. Our by-topic view makes it easy to find questions on exactly the topic you've just studied, so you can work through the content systematically all year long.

How many past papers should I do?

Quality of review matters as much as volume when it comes to past paper practice, and the right amount really depends on how much time you have before your exams. With CIE 9618, there are four papers to prepare for (Papers 1, 2, 3, and 4), each testing quite different skills, so we'd suggest spreading your practice across all of them rather than focusing heavily on just one or two. Our exam practice on Cognito lets you work through questions by topic first, which is a great way to build confidence before moving on to full papers. After each attempt, spending as much time with the mark scheme as you did on the paper itself is where a lot of the learning happens, because understanding exactly why an answer did or didn't score is what helps the knowledge stick.

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Yes! Working through past papers under timed conditions is a really valuable part of your 9618 revision, because it builds the pacing and exam stamina you'll need across CIE's four papers. We'd suggest getting confident with the content first using our notes and flashcards, then moving to our exam practice by topic, and saving full timed attempts for when you're closer to the exam. You can also use pre-testing as a technique, attempting questions before you've fully revised a topic to prime your brain for what to focus on next. Paper 4 is slightly different since it's a 2-hour 30-minute practical paper on a computer, so you'll want plenty of untimed coding practice first before adding the pressure of a clock.

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

A low mark on a past paper is useful information, not a reason to worry. We'd suggest going through each question you dropped marks on and identifying whether the gap is in content knowledge, pseudocode technique, or how you applied CIE's command words (like "describe", "explain", or "justify"), since the spec sets out exactly what each of those expects from you. Our by-topic view lets you jump straight to the area you struggled with, so you are not re-covering ground you already know. Once you've reviewed the content, active recall through our flashcards and quizzes is a great way to check the knowledge has stuck before you return to another paper.

How do I mark my own past paper using the Cambridge International (CIE) mark scheme?

Self-marking CIE past papers works best when you read the mark scheme alongside Cambridge's command word definitions. The mark scheme rewards specific points, so checking that your answer addresses the exact command word used (for example, 'Describe' asks for characteristics and main features, while 'Explain' requires reasons and relationships) is a good starting point. We'd suggest reading through each mark point carefully, then annotating your answer to see which points you hit and which you missed. For longer 'Discuss' or 'Evaluate' questions, mark schemes often accept a range of valid points, so focus on whether your reasoning is supported by evidence rather than matching word-for-word. Our exam practice questions include worked examples that show you what a strong answer looks like, which can help you calibrate your self-marking. When you identify gaps, our notes and flashcards can help you revisit those specific topics using spaced retrieval.
