Question 1

When should I start doing AQA A-Level Computer Science past papers?

Accepted Answer

Starting past-paper questions topic by topic from early in the course is something we'd strongly suggest, rather than saving everything for the revision period. As you work through each area with our notes, using related exam questions straight away helps you identify gaps while the content is still fresh.

This is a form of spaced retrieval, and it's one of the most effective study habits you can build. We'd then suggest keeping a small number of full papers (two or three is a sensible target) for the final weeks, when you can experience the full 2 hours 30 minutes of each paper under realistic conditions.

Your school mocks are a natural dress rehearsal for this. Our exam practice lets you filter questions by topic, so you can steadily build that habit throughout the year before stepping up to full papers as your exams approach.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

Working through past papers is one of the most effective ways to prepare for Computer Science, and we'd suggest completing as many as you can find. Since the first exams for this specification sat in 2017, there is a meaningful but not enormous pool to work from, so it is worth going through each one carefully rather than rushing through them. Bear in mind that paper 1 is an on-screen programming exam and paper 2 is a written paper, so you will want to practise both formats as they test very different skills. Our exam practice tool lets you focus on specific topics first before building up to full papers, which helps you spot gaps and close them before you commit to a whole paper.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Timing yourself on past papers becomes much more valuable once you have a solid grasp of the content, so we'd suggest working through our notes and flashcards first, then building up to full timed attempts.

For paper 1 in particular, time management is worth practising, since you need to read the Preliminary Material, interpret the Skeleton Program, and write or adapt code all within 2 hours 30 minutes. Paper 2 also runs to 2 hours 30 minutes, so getting a feel for the pace across short-answer and extended-answer questions matters too. Our exam practice section lets you work through questions by topic first, which is a great way to build confidence before moving on to full paper attempts. Spacing your practice sessions out over several weeks, rather than cramming papers all at once, tends to produce better results.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

A low mark on a past paper is more useful than it might feel right now, because it shows you exactly which topics need more attention before the real exams. We'd suggest going through the mark scheme carefully to identify whether your gaps sit in the programming questions (Paper 1) or the theory questions (Paper 2), then heading back to our notes for those specific topics before attempting another paper.

Once you've revisited the content, using active recall, such as closing the notes and writing down everything you can remember on a topic, is a great way to check whether the knowledge has stuck. Our by-topic view makes it straightforward to target exactly the areas where marks slipped, and our flashcards can help you consolidate the theory-heavy content from paper 2.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the AQA mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

Self-marking a Computer Science past paper is a genuinely useful habit, and AQA's mark schemes are more accessible than many students expect. We'd suggest downloading the mark scheme alongside the paper from AQA's website (aqa.org.uk/subjects/computer-science/a-level/computer-science-7517), where you'll also find examiners' reports that explain where marks are commonly lost.

For paper 2's short-answer and extended-answer questions, we'd suggest going through the mark scheme point by point and awarding yourself marks wherever your answer hits the stated criteria. For paper 1's programming questions, AQA's mark scheme typically accepts any correct working approach, so the question to ask is whether your code achieves the right logic and outcome rather than whether it matches the example solution word for word. When you're unsure whether an answer qualifies, the examiners' report is often the clearest guide. Our exam practice questions come with model answers that can help you calibrate your judgement before you tackle a full paper.
