When should I start doing Pearson Edexcel A-Level Chemistry past papers?

We'd suggest starting past-paper questions **by topic** as soon as you finish learning each topic, this helps you embed the content while it's still fresh. Work through questions for that topic in our exam practice to spot gaps early, then revisit the content in our notes if you need to. Save 2 or 3 full **timed** past papers for the final few weeks before your exams. Practising under exam conditions at that stage helps you build stamina for the longer papers (Paper 3 is 2h 30m) and get comfortable with the timing. Your school may also set mocks earlier in the year, use those as full-paper practice too. This way, you're testing yourself throughout the course (which helps the knowledge stick) and finishing your revision with realistic exam rehearsals.

How many past papers should I do?

There isn't a magic number, it depends on where you are in your preparation. We'd suggest starting with 2–3 past papers to get familiar with the format and timing, then increasing to one every week or two as you build confidence. By exam season, aim to sit a full set (all three papers) under timed conditions at least twice, so you're comfortable with the pacing and pressure. The key is mixing papers with focused topic work using our exam practice questions, that way you're reinforcing content while building exam technique, rather than just drilling papers in isolation.

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

We'd suggest doing most of your past papers under timed conditions, yes. **Paper 1** and **Paper 2** are each 1 hour 45 minutes (90 marks), and **Paper 3** is 2 hours 30 minutes (120 marks), so practising within those time limits helps you get comfortable with the pace you'll need on exam day. That said, when you first start with a past paper, it's absolutely fine to work through it untimed, this helps you focus on understanding the question styles and applying your knowledge without the added pressure. Once you're confident with the content, switch to timed practice. Our exam practice lets you filter by topic or paper, so you can build up gradually and then simulate full exam conditions when you're ready.

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Getting a low mark on a past paper isn't a reason to panic, it's valuable feedback showing you exactly where to focus your revision. First, mark your paper carefully using the mark scheme and identify which topics or question types cost you the most marks. Those are your revision priorities. Next, revisit the relevant content in our notes and use our by-topic exam practice to drill those weak areas, this targeted approach is far more effective than simply doing another full paper. Finally, review your mistakes to spot patterns: are you losing marks through misreading questions, missing key command words, or gaps in your practical knowledge? Once you know what went wrong, you can fix it. Our flashcards and quizzes are particularly useful for plugging knowledge gaps quickly, and our exam practice lets you build confidence in the specific areas that tripped you up.

How do I mark my own past paper using the Pearson Edexcel mark scheme?

Pearson Edexcel publishes mark schemes alongside each past paper, you'll find them on the same page where you downloaded the paper. Open the mark scheme PDF and work through it question by question, checking your answers against the points listed. Each mark scheme shows exactly what examiners are looking for: specific keywords, correct calculations, or particular explanations. Award yourself a mark only when your answer matches what's written, partial credit is shown with semi-colons separating alternative acceptable answers. Keep a tally as you go, then total up your marks at the end. Our exam practice tool mirrors this process: it shows you the mark scheme after each question, so you can see instantly where you've gained or lost marks and build that self-assessment skill.
