When should I start doing Cambridge International (CIE) A-Level Chemistry past papers?

We'd suggest starting past-paper questions topic by topic as soon as you've covered each section in your notes, treating them as active recall rather than a final exam-sim. For example, once you've finished atomic structure, try the past-paper questions on that topic; once you've finished equilibria, do the equilibria questions, and so on. This approach helps the content stick earlier in the year and shows you where your understanding needs topping up. Save two or three **full timed papers** for the final few weeks before your exams. By then you'll have covered the whole syllabus and can use them to practise pacing, stamina and exam technique under realistic conditions. Your school may also set mocks, those are a useful dress rehearsal for the real thing.

How many past papers should I do?

There's no fixed number, it varies by student and how comfortable you feel with exam technique. We'd suggest focusing on quality over quantity: start with a few recent papers under timed conditions, review them carefully (identifying recurring question types and common mistakes), then do more as needed. Many students find 5–8 full past papers enough to build confidence, but if certain topics still feel shaky, you might want to do extra questions from those sections.

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

We'd suggest yes, at least for some of your practice, timed conditions help you build exam stamina and get used to working under pressure. Paper 3 (the practical paper) is two hours, and Paper 4 is another two hours, so you need to train yourself, so you need to train yourself to stay focused and manage your time efficiently.

That said, it's also fine to work through past papers untimed first, especially when you're learning the material or testing yourself on specific topics. Once you're confident with the content, switch to timed runs. What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Don't panic. A low mark on a past paper is a really useful learning signal, it shows you exactly where to focus next. Here's what we'd suggest doing:

**First, go through the mark scheme carefully.** For each question you lost marks on, compare your answer to the model answer and examiner notes. This helps you see whether you missed content, didn't show enough working, or misread what the question was asking for.

**Then, identify the topics.** Group your mistakes by topic, maybe you struggled with Born–Haber cycles, or organic mechanisms, or electrode potentials. How do I mark my own past paper using the Cambridge International (CIE) mark scheme?

Grab the mark scheme and your answers, here's how to mark yourself. Cambridge International (CIE) publishes detailed mark schemes for every past paper, so you can see exactly what examiners were looking for in each question.

**Find the mark scheme:** Download it from the same place you got the past paper (School Support Hub or your teacher). It'll have the same code as your paper (e.g. 9701/21 for Paper 2, May/June 2023).

**Mark point by point:** The mark scheme breaks each answer into marking points. Award yourself a mark for each point you hit, even if your wording's different, examiners accept alternative correct phrasing. For calculations, check both your working and final answer; you can still pick up method marks even if your answer's wrong.
