When should I start doing AQA A-Level Chemistry past papers?

Once you've learned a topic (say, bonding or equilibria), spend a few minutes practising those specific questions to lock the knowledge in. Doing papers under exam conditions helps you build stamina, manage time across the different question types, and get used to the pressure of working to a deadline. That said, don't rush into timed attempts too early, if you're still learning the material or find yourself stuck on most questions, it's more useful to work through papers untimed first, checking your answers as you go.

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Getting a low mark isn't the end, it's useful feedback that shows where you need to focus next. We'd suggest reviewing the paper to see which topics tripped you up, then using our notes and by-topic quizzes to strengthen those areas before trying another paper. Track the types of questions you're finding hardest (calculations, multi-step reasoning, unfamiliar contexts) and practise those question styles using our exam practice.

If you keep testing yourself with timed past papers and filling the gaps each time, your scores will improve.

How do I mark my own past paper using the AQA mark scheme?

When you mark your own past paper, work through the question one step at a time and compare your answer to the mark scheme, award yourself a mark whenever you meet the requirement exactly as it's written. AQA mark schemes use bullet points, so if your answer includes the phrase, data or step that matches a bullet point, you've earned that mark. If the mark scheme specifies multiple points for a question, check you've addressed each one; partial credit is allowed where your working shows understanding even if the final answer isn't quite right.

For practical or data-analysis questions, look for whether you've identified the correct trend, explained the chemistry behind it, or calculated the right value using the equation stated in the scheme.
