Question 1

When should I start doing OCR A-Level Business Studies past papers?

Accepted Answer

Starting past-paper practice early pays off for OCR A-Level Business Studies, and you don't need to wait until revision season to begin. We'd suggest using our by-topic view to work through targeted past-paper questions as you finish each topic, since this kind of spaced retrieval helps the content stick far more effectively than saving everything until the end.

As your mocks approach, we'd suggest moving on to longer stretches of each paper, so you build stamina and get comfortable with OCR's extended response and evaluation questions. Then in the final weeks before the real exams, we'd suggest setting aside two or three complete papers so you can feel the full rhythm of all three 2-hour papers.

Our exam practice is organised by topic, making it easy to focus on the areas where you feel least confident first.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

Working through as many past papers as you can find is one of the most effective things you can do in the run-up to your exams, because OCR H431 rewards students who can apply business concepts confidently to unfamiliar case studies and data.

We'd suggest prioritising quality over quantity: work through each paper carefully, check your answers against the mark scheme, and note the topics and command words that keep coming up across all three components. Our exam practice on Cognito is organised by topic, so you can also target the areas where you feel least confident rather than always starting from the beginning of a paper.

Once you've worked through a paper, spending time reviewing your answers with active recall (closing your notes and trying to reconstruct what a strong response looks like) will help the knowledge stick far more than simply re-reading a mark scheme.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Past papers are one of the most useful tools in your revision kit, and we'd suggest making timed conditions a regular part of how you use them. OCR H431 has three 2-hour papers, so building stamina and pacing is genuinely important before the real thing.

That said, we'd suggest using papers in two ways. Early in your revision, working through questions without a clock can help you focus on understanding what a strong answer looks like and how OCR's mark schemes reward evaluation and judgement. Once you feel confident with the content, shifting to full timed runs helps you practise allocating your time across a paper and identifying which areas still need attention. Our exam practice gives you a structured way to work through questions by topic before you tackle full papers.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

A low past paper mark is more useful than it might feel right now, because it shows you exactly where to focus your revision before the real thing. We'd suggest going through the mark scheme question by question to work out whether the gaps are in content knowledge or exam technique, since both need a different approach.

If it's content, our notes and flashcards can help you go back over the relevant topic in detail. If it's technique, particularly for the longer evaluate-style questions that run through OCR's three 2-hour papers, our exam practice section walks through how to build and structure those responses effectively.

Spaced retrieval is worth weaving into your plan too: returning to the topics that cost you marks across several short sessions helps the content stick far more reliably than one long cramming session.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the OCR mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

Marking your own work carefully is one of the most rewarding things you can do in exam preparation, and OCR mark schemes repay close reading. The H431 mark schemes cover two broad types of question: calculation and knowledge questions where there is a definitive correct answer, and extended-response questions where OCR uses a levels-of-response approach that rewards the depth and quality of your reasoning rather than matching specific phrases.

For the levels-of-response questions, read each level descriptor honestly and place your answer in the level that reflects what you wrote, not what you meant to write. Our exam practice on Cognito models the kinds of evaluative responses OCR rewards, which makes those descriptors much easier to apply to your own answers.

A strong follow-up habit is active recall: after marking, jot down every point you missed, then close the mark scheme and try to reconstruct those points from memory before moving on to the next question.
