Question 1

When should I start doing Pearson Edexcel A-Level Business Studies past papers?

Accepted Answer

We'd suggest working through past-paper questions topic by topic throughout the year, then saving 2–3 full timed papers for your final weeks.

**Why topic by topic first?** Each time you finish a theme, Marketing and people, Managing business activities, Business decisions and strategy, or Global business, use past papers to practise those specific topics. That way you're applying the content while it's fresh, which helps it stick. Our exam practice lets you filter questions by topic so you can target exactly what you've just learned.

**When to do full papers?** Once you've covered most of the course, use your school's mock exams (usually January or February for Year 13) as your first full-paper run-through. Then, in your final 4–6 weeks before May/June exams, sit 2–3 complete past papers under exam conditions, 2 hours each, no notes. That simulates the real thing and shows you whether you can pace yourself across Themes 1–4 in paper 3, or across the two data-response questions in papers 1 and 2.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

There's no magic number, the value comes from using them strategically rather than counting how many you tick off. We'd suggest working through enough papers to cover the variety of question types and contexts across all three papers, then revisiting the ones where you spotted gaps. Most students find that 3–5 full papers (timed, under exam conditions) give them a solid feel for the format and pacing, plus expose recurring themes. After that, you can target specific papers or sections where you need more practice. Our exam practice lets you filter by paper and topic, so you can focus on the areas that matter most without burning through every single past paper.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and we'd really suggest doing so once you've built up your understanding and confidence with the content.

Timed practice helps you get comfortable with the pace you'll need on exam day, so you're not caught off guard by how quickly 2 hours goes by. It also shows you which question types take you longer, so you can adjust your strategy. That said, if you're still learning the material or building your recall, it's worth practising untimed first, use our notes to strengthen your knowledge, then work through our exam practice to get familiar with the question formats. Once you're feeling more confident, switch to timed conditions and treat it like the real thing.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

Don't worry, a low mark on a practice paper isn't a setback; it's valuable feedback showing you exactly where to focus your revision. Start by working through the mark scheme to see where you lost marks, then go back to our notes on those specific topics to rebuild your understanding. Once you've reviewed the content, use our exam practice questions on the same topics to apply what you've relearned, and try another full paper in a few weeks to track your progress.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the Pearson Edexcel mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

The Pearson Edexcel mark schemes show exactly what examiners want for each mark. Work through the mark scheme line by line as you mark your answer, award yourself a tick for every point you've covered, then total your marks at the end. The examiners' reports (published alongside past papers on the Pearson website) are really helpful too, they explain common mistakes and what stronger answers include.

If your answer doesn't quite match a bullet point in the scheme, ask yourself whether you've made the same underlying point in different words. Our exam practice walks you through this exact process, so you'll get quicker and more accurate at self-marking over time.
