Question 1

How long does it take to memorise the A-Level Biology vocabulary?

Accepted Answer

There is no fixed timeline that works for every student, and A-Level Biology vocabulary is genuinely broad, spanning six teaching modules from cell structure and biological molecules right through to genetics and ecosystems. The honest answer is that consistency matters far more than speed.

Our flashcards are organised by topic, so we'd suggest working through one module at a time rather than trying to cover everything at once. Spaced retrieval is the most research-backed way to approach this: revisiting cards at increasing intervals helps vocabulary stick far more effectively than a single cramming session. A steady habit of returning to cards you found tricky will do more for your long-term recall than any specific number of hours.

Question 2

How many flashcards should I do a day?

Accepted Answer

A consistent daily habit matters more than hitting a specific number, because spaced retrieval works by building memory through regular, repeated exposure rather than occasional large sessions. We'd suggest starting with around 20–30 of our flashcards a day, working through the OCR Biology A modules in order so your understanding of each topic builds up steadily alongside your recall. When a card feels secure, space it out further; when something like the stages of meiosis or the roles of ADH still trips you up, keep it in your daily rotation until it sticks.

Keeping that rhythm going across the full two-year course will prepare you well for the linear assessments in May/June.

Question 3

Should I make my own Biology flashcards or use Cognito's?

Accepted Answer

Both approaches have real value, and the best strategy for OCR A-Level Biology often combines them. Our flashcards are built directly from the H420 specification, so they cover the key definitions, processes and concepts you need without the risk of leaving gaps in your revision.

That said, making a small number of your own cards for topics you personally find tricky can deepen understanding, because deciding what to write forces you to engage with the content actively. A great hybrid is the blurt technique: read a topic in our notes, close them, write down everything you can recall, then use our flashcards to check what you missed and fill the gaps. We'd suggest starting with our flashcards as your foundation and adding your own only where you feel you need to personalise the content further.

Question 4

Which OCR (Spec A) Biology topics are flashcards best for?

Accepted Answer

Flashcards work especially well for the terminology-dense areas of this course, and OCR (Spec A) Biology has plenty of those. Topics such as biological molecules, cell structure, the immune system, neuronal communication and genetics all involve multi-step processes and precise vocabulary where spaced retrieval practice really helps the content stick. Our flashcards are built around active recall, making them ideal for memorising organelle functions, enzyme mechanisms, stages of processes like mitosis or the cardiac cycle, and the roles of structures like antibodies and nephrons.

For topics that lean more on analysis and application, pairing our flashcards with our exam practice tends to give you the best of both worlds.

Question 5

Why do I keep forgetting A-Level Biology vocabulary?

Accepted Answer

Forgetting vocabulary is one of the most common struggles in A-Level Biology, and it usually comes down to passive studying. Reading over notes feels productive but doesn't force your brain to retrieve information, so terms like "carbonic anhydrase" or "semi-conservative replication" slip away quickly.

The fix is spaced retrieval: revisiting a term after a short gap, trying to recall its meaning before you check, builds a much stronger memory trace each time. Our flashcards are built for exactly this, prompting you to retrieve each term before revealing the definition so your brain does the real work.

We'd suggest starting with the module you find toughest and working through the cards a little each day rather than in one long session.
