Question 1

When should I start doing Pearson Edexcel (Salters Nuffield) A-Level Biology past papers?

Accepted Answer

Starting early with topic-by-topic questions is the best approach for 9BN0. Our exam practice lets you work through individual topics as you study them, so you're building exam technique alongside your content knowledge from the beginning of the course.

We'd suggest saving full past papers for the lead-up to your mocks and the final revision period, once you have enough content under your belt to tackle all three papers. Working through 2–3 full papers in the final weeks is a great way to build stamina, practise moving between question types, and spot any remaining gaps before the real thing.

One detail worth planning around for Paper 3: Pearson Edexcel releases a pre-released scientific article 8 weeks before the exam, so factor in time to read and annotate that article as part of your final revision schedule.

Question 2

How many past papers should I do?

Accepted Answer

The exam has 3 papers (each 2 hours and 100 marks), so each year of past papers gives you 3 complete papers to work through. We'd suggest starting with the most recent years and working backwards, as newer papers tend to reflect current examiner expectations most closely. After working through each paper, reviewing your answers carefully and identifying gaps in your understanding is a great form of active recall that helps the content stick.

Our exam practice section also lets you focus on specific topics if you want to build confidence in particular areas before tackling full papers.

Question 3

Should I do past papers under timed conditions?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Timing yourself on past papers is genuinely worth doing for Edexcel (Salters Nuffield) A-Level Biology, because each of the three papers is 2 hours long with 100 marks to work through, and building a sense of pace is something that only comes with practice.

We'd suggest using our by-topic exam practice first to build confidence area by area, then moving to full papers with a timer once the content feels solid. Treat the marking session afterwards as equally important; our notes can help you trace any gaps back to the specific topic that caught you out, which is a powerful form of active recall.

One thing worth noting for Paper 3: a pre-released scientific article underpins part of that paper, so we'd suggest reading it thoroughly before attempting any timed practice for that paper, since familiarity with the article helps you move through those questions more efficiently.

Question 4

What should I do if I get a low mark on a past paper?

Accepted Answer

A low mark on a past paper is genuinely useful, because it shows you exactly where to focus your revision next. We'd suggest going through each question you dropped marks on and sorting your mistakes into two groups: content you didn't know and technique issues where you understood the biology but lost marks on phrasing or approach.

For content gaps, our notes and flashcards help you revisit those areas using spaced retrieval, which research shows is far more effective than simply re-reading. For technique, our exam practice lets you work through more questions on that specific topic until the approach feels natural.

It's also worth checking Pearson's mark scheme carefully, particularly for extended-writing questions, where the expected language can be very precise. Because all three papers each carry 33.33% of your final grade, strengthening weak topics will pay off across every paper and make a real difference to your overall result.

Question 5

How do I mark my own past paper using the Pearson Edexcel (Salters Nuffield) mark scheme?

Accepted Answer

The Pearson Edexcel (Salters Nuffield) mark scheme tells you which answers earn credit, often listing accepted alternatives alongside the main answer, so reading every line carefully before awarding yourself a mark is important. For extended writing questions, the mark scheme sets out the qualities of a strong response, so we'd suggest comparing your whole answer against those criteria rather than just scanning for individual keywords.

Being strict with yourself is worth it: if your phrasing is vague or misses a key biological term, hold off on the mark. The gaps you identify this way are the most valuable part of the exercise, pointing you directly to the topics and question types that need more attention. Our exam practice can help you revisit those areas with targeted questions, so you're building on what the past paper has shown you.
