Question 1

How do I get full marks on a 6-mark question in Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Physics?

Accepted Answer

Extended open-response questions in Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Physics are marked using levels-of-response criteria, so the examiner looks at the overall quality of your scientific reasoning rather than ticking off individual points. The command word is your first clue: the spec's own command word taxonomy tells you that "explain" requires reasoning and justification, "evaluate" means reviewing evidence and reaching a supported judgement, and "describe" asks for a developed account without requiring reasons.

To reach the top band, we'd suggest covering the relevant physics in a logical sequence, linking your ideas with words like "because" and "therefore," and using precise terminology from the specification throughout. Our exam practice includes extended open-response questions with mark schemes, so you can study what a top-band response looks like and use spaced retrieval to build up your confidence before sitting the paper.

Question 2

What do the levels in the Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Physics mark scheme mean?

Accepted Answer

Levels-based marking applies to the extended open-response questions you'll find in both papers, and it rewards the overall quality of your answer rather than simply counting correct points. A stronger answer doesn't just recall facts (that's AO1, knowledge and understanding); it applies and links ideas together (AO2), and where the question calls for it, evaluates evidence or methods (AO3). Our exam practice includes worked examples that show exactly what a higher-level response looks like, which is the most useful way to see what the mark scheme is asking for.

Question 3

What's the difference between Cognito's exam practice and past papers?

Accepted Answer

Our exam practice is organised by topic, so you can target whichever areas of the 4PH1 spec need the most attention, working through forces and motion, waves, radioactivity, or any of the eight topics at your own pace. Past papers bundle everything together in one sitting, replicating the real exam across Paper 1 (2 hours, 110 marks) and Paper 2 (1 hour 15 minutes, 70 marks), which is great for building stamina and getting used to the way Pearson mixes question styles. We'd suggest using our exam practice to build confidence topic by topic first, then moving to past papers to get comfortable with the full timing and structure closer to your exam date.

Question 4

How long should I spend on each question in the exam?

Accepted Answer

A helpful rule of thumb comes straight from the numbers in the spec. Paper 1 gives you 120 minutes for 110 marks, and Paper 2 gives you 75 minutes for 70 marks. Both work out to just over one minute per mark, so aim to give roughly that amount of time for each mark a question is worth.

In practice, that means a 1-mark recall question needs only about a minute, while a 6-mark extended response deserves around six minutes of careful writing. Our exam practice shows the mark tariff on every question, so you can use it to build a feel for pacing across both papers before the real thing.
