Question 1

How do I get full marks on a 6-mark question in OCR GCSE Biology?

Accepted Answer

OCR uses levels-of-response marking for 6-mark questions, which means you earn marks by how well you build and link your argument, not just by listing facts.

**What levels-of-response means:**

The examiner places your answer at one of three levels (typically Level 1 = 1–2 marks, Level 2 = 3–4 marks, Level 3 = 5–6 marks). They judge how well you've developed a coherent, logical explanation. A Level 3 answer links relevant scientific ideas clearly, uses correct terminology, and builds a complete chain of reasoning. A Level 1 answer might list correct points but doesn't connect them or develop the science fully.

**How to write a Level-3 answer:**

Start by identifying exactly what the question is asking for (cause, explanation, comparison, evaluation). Plan two or three linked points before you write.

Question 2

What do the levels in a Biology mark scheme mean?

Accepted Answer

Levels are OCR's way of marking longer-answer questions where you need to write several sentences or a paragraph. Instead of ticking off individual mark-points, the examiner reads your whole answer and decides which level it fits into (typically Level 1, Level 2, or Level 3), then awards a mark within that band.

**How levels work:**

Each level describes the quality of your answer. Level 1 answers are basic (perhaps a single point or unclear reasoning), Level 2 answers are better (two or three relevant points, some logical flow), and Level 3 answers are the strongest (detailed, well-organised, with clear scientific reasoning linking cause and effect). The mark scheme gives a mark range for each level, and the examiner picks where you fall within that range.

**What examiners look for:**

To reach the higher levels, your answer needs to be coherent (ideas flow logically), comprehensive (you've covered the key points the question asks for), and scientifically accurate. If you write three good points but they're muddled or don't connect to the question, you might land in Level 2 instead of Level 3.

Question 3

What's the difference between Cognito's exam practice and past papers?

Accepted Answer

Our exam practice gives you **curated, topic-tagged questions** drawn from real OCR past papers, so you can drill one topic at a time and see exactly where you need more work. You pick a topic (say, B3 Organism level systems), answer a set of questions, and get instant feedback with full mark-scheme explanations. That's really useful when you're building up your knowledge topic-by-topic.

**Past papers** are the full exam, exactly as OCR set them. You sit Paper 7 or Paper 8 under timed conditions (1 hour 10 minutes, 60 marks), covering all the topics in that paper at once. They're perfect for exam practice once you've revised the content, because they train you to manage your time, spot command words, and handle the mix of AO1 recall, AO2 application, and AO3 analysis questions you'll see in May/June.

We'd suggest using our exam practice first to strengthen individual topics, then moving to full past papers closer to your exams.

Question 4

How long should I spend on each question in the exam?

Accepted Answer

A good rule of thumb is **just over a minute per mark**, which keeps you on track without rushing.

Each of your Biology papers (Paper 7 and Paper 8) gives you 70 minutes to answer 60 marks' worth of questions. That works out at roughly 1 minute 10 seconds per mark. In practice, most students find it helpful to think "1 mark = 1 minute", then use the spare 10 minutes at the end to check their answers and fill in anything they skipped.

**For shorter questions** (1–2 marks), you might spend 30 seconds to 1 minute each. They're often definitions or simple calculations, so you can move through them quickly. **For longer questions** (4–6 marks), budget 5–7 minutes.
