Resources that organisms need for survival
All organisms require certain resources to live, grow, and reproduce. These resources are essential materials or conditions from the environment that support life processes. Without enough of them, organisms cannot function properly.
Key resources for organisms
- Food - Provides energy and materials needed for growth and daily activities
- Water - Essential for chemical reactions in the body and maintaining internal balance
- Oxygen - Needed for respiration in a lot of organisms to break down food and release energy
- Space - Provides room for living, finding food, and reproducing without overcrowding
Organisms obtain these resources from their surroundings, but the availability can vary depending on the environment.
How access to resources limits growth and population size
Access to resources directly affects how much an organism can grow and how large a population can become. When resources are plentiful, organisms can thrive, but limited access creates restrictions. This occurs because resources are finite in any environment, and organisms use them up as they live and reproduce.
Ways limited resources affect organisms:
- Growth restrictions - Without enough food or water, individual organisms cannot build new body parts or increase in size, leading to stunted development

As a result, environments have a carrying capacity, which is the maximum population size that can be sustained based on available resources.

This happens when multiple organisms or species have overlapping needs, such as the same type of food or living space. Competition arises because there isn't enough to go around for everyone.
