The natural greenhouse effect
The greenhouse effect is a natural process that helps keep Earth warm enough for life. Certain gases in the atmosphere act like the glass in a greenhouse, trapping some of the Sun's energy that reaches Earth. This trapped energy maintains a stable temperature on our planet.
Key greenhouse gases involved in the greenhouse effect
- Carbon dioxide (CO2) - A gas produced naturally and through human activities, which absorbs heat radiation
- Methane - A gas released from sources like agriculture and natural decay, known for its strong heat-trapping ability
- Water vapor - The gaseous form of water in the atmosphere, which also absorbs and re-emits heat
These gases are called greenhouse gases because they play the main role in this warming process.
How the greenhouse effect works
- Solar energy from the Sun reaches Earth as radiation and warms the surface.
- The warmed surface gives off infrared radiation (heat energy) back toward space.
- Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere absorb some of this infrared radiation.
- The gases then re-emit the absorbed radiation in all directions, including back toward Earth's surface.
- This re-emitted radiation warms the surface and lower atmosphere again, maintaining Earth's overall temperature.
Without this natural effect, Earth would be much colder and less suitable for life.
