Earth's four spheres and their resources
Earth provides many resources that humans and other living things need to survive. These resources come from four main spheres, which are like different parts of the planet. Each sphere offers specific materials or services that we use in daily life.
The lithosphere
The lithosphere includes the solid ground and everything on or in it. This sphere provides resources that come from the Earth's surface and below.
Resources from the lithosphere:
- Minerals - Naturally occurring solid substances from rocks, used to make metals and other materials
- Soil - The top layer of Earth where plants grow, important for farming and holding water
- Forests - Large areas of trees that give wood, help clean the air, and provide homes for animals
The hydrosphere
The hydrosphere covers all the water in seas and oceans. It supplies resources from both the water itself and the energy it creates.
Resources from the hydrosphere:
- Seafood - Fish and other sea creatures that people eat for food
- Salt - A mineral taken from seawater, used for cooking and preserving food
- Wave energy - The power from ocean waves that can be turned into electricity
The atmosphere
The atmosphere is the layer of air around Earth. It provides resources related to gases and weather patterns.
Resources from the atmosphere:
- Oxygen - A gas in the air that all living things need to breathe
- Wind energy - The movement of air that can be used to generate power through wind turbines
- Water cycle - The process where water evaporates, forms clouds, and falls as rain, providing fresh water
The biosphere
The biosphere includes all living things on Earth and their environments. It offers resources from plants, animals, and natural systems.
Resources from the biosphere:
- Food - Plants and animals that provide nutrition for humans and other organisms
- Medicines - Substances from plants and animals used to treat illnesses
- Ecosystem services - Natural benefits like pollination by bees or water purification by wetlands
These spheres work together, but their resources are not endless. This leads to important limitations that we need to understand.
Limitations of Earth's resources
Many of Earth's resources are limited, meaning they can run out or become hard to get if we use them too much. These limits come from how resources form and how we use them.
Finite quantities of resources
Some resources exist in fixed amounts and take a very long time to form, so they can't be replaced quickly.
Examples of finite resources:
- Minerals - These form deep in the Earth over thousands of years and are available only in certain amounts
- Fossil fuels - Fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas that come from ancient plants and animals, taking millions of years to create
Because they form so slowly, once we use them up, they are gone for good in our lifetime.
Overuse of resources
When people take too much from Earth's spheres, it can harm the environment and make resources scarce.
Examples of overuse:
- Overfishing - Catching too many fish from the ocean, which reduces fish populations and affects food supplies
- Deforestation - Cutting down too many trees in forests, leading to loss of soil, habitats, and clean air
Overuse happens when we take resources faster than they can naturally recover, creating shortages.
Uneven global distribution of resources
Resources are not spread evenly across the planet. Some places have a lot, while others have very little. This uneven distribution is caused by geological processes, which are natural events that shape where resources form and end up.

Geological processes are changes in Earth's structure over time. They create specific conditions that make resources form in certain locations.
Key geological processes:
- Plate tectonics - The movement of large pieces of Earth's crust, which can push up minerals or create mountains where resources collect
- Volcanic activity - Eruptions from volcanoes that bring minerals to the surface or form new land with rich soil
- Weathering - The breaking down of rocks by wind, water, and temperature changes, which creates soil but only in areas with the right climate
- Specific formation conditions - Resources need exact environments to form, like fossil fuels requiring ancient swamps buried under layers of rock
As a result, some countries have plenty of resources like oil or minerals, while others must import them. This uneven spread can lead to global challenges, making it important to use what we have wisely.
Sustainable practices for resource management
To deal with resource limitations and uneven distribution, we need sustainable practices. These are ways to use resources without running out or harming the environment. The main principles are reduce, reuse, and recycle, which help make resources last longer.
Principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle
Following these steps creates a cycle that saves resources and reduces waste.
The three principles:
- Reduce - Use less of a resource to begin with, like turning off lights to save energy or buying fewer new items
- Reuse - Use things again instead of throwing them away, such as refilling water bottles or donating clothes
- Recycle - Turn old materials into new ones, like melting down plastic bottles to make new containers
By applying these principles, we can protect Earth's spheres and ensure resources are available for the future. For example, recycling metals reduces the need to mine new minerals, helping with finite quantities and overuse.
