The formation and characteristics of beaches
Beaches are coastal landforms created by the deposition of eroded material from the sea, often accumulating in sheltered areas such as bays between headlands. Their appearance and composition vary widely depending on local geology and wave energy, ranging from fine sandy shores to pebbly stretches.
Types and features of beaches
- Size variation - Beaches can be small, tucked into narrow inlets, or extensive, covering vast coastal areas.
- Material composition - The type of material on a beach depends on the local rock type and the energy of the waves.
Storm beaches
Storm beaches are ridges of larger boulders or rocks formed at the landward edge of a beach, above the high-tide mark. They are created during powerful storms when heavy seas push coarse material up the shore, forming a distinct mound.
The development of spits through longshore drift
Spits are elongated beaches made of sand or pebbles that extend out into the sea while remaining attached to the land at one end. They are primarily formed by the process of longshore drift, where sediment is transported along the coast by wave action.
Formation process of spits
Waves approach the shore at an angle, carrying sediment along the coastline. When the direction of the coast changes or wave energy decreases, sediment is deposited, forming a spit.
Characteristics and locations of spits
Common locations for spits:
- Across the mouths of rivers
- At points where the coastline abruptly changes direction
- In areas where strong tidal currents meet calmer waters, such as bays or inlets
Features of spits:
- The sea behind a spit is often sheltered from wave action, leading to the formation of mud flats or salt marshes in these calm zones.
- A notable spit can be found across the mouth of the River Exe in Devon, demonstrating how sediment builds up over time.
The features of tombolos and their connection to the mainland
Tombolos are unique coastal landforms where a ridge of deposited material, often sand or shingle, connects an island to the mainland. They are formed by wave action depositing sediment in the space between the two landmasses.
Formation and characteristics of tombolos
Waves refract around an offshore island, losing energy and depositing sediment in the calmer area between the island and the mainland, creating a connecting ridge. The resulting landform physically joins the island to the coast, forming a natural bridge of material.
A prominent tombolo is found along the south coast of England at Chesil Beach, where a long ridge of shingle links the Isle of Portland to the mainland.
The creation and impact of barrier beaches
Barrier beaches are extensive spits that grow completely across the mouth of a shallow bay, sealing it off from the open sea. This deposition process creates a distinct separation between the sea and the enclosed water body behind the barrier.
Formation and consequences of barrier beaches
Similar to spits, barrier beaches form through longshore drift, but they extend fully across a bay, blocking its entrance with a wall of deposited sand or shingle. The water trapped behind a barrier beach becomes a lagoon, which over time may transform into a marsh.
A well-known barrier beach is located at Slapton Sands in Devon, where a long stretch of shingle has enclosed a body of water now known as a lagoon.
