Sustainable forestry aims to balance the demand for timber and other forest resources with the need to preserve forest ecosystems for future generations. Several techniques have been developed to minimise environmental damage while maintaining economic benefits.
Methods for sustainable logging
- Cabling - Unlike clear-cutting, which involves removing large swathes of forest indiscriminately, cabling uses cables and winches to extract specific trees. This method significantly reduces collateral damage to surrounding vegetation and soil.
- Replanting - After trees are harvested, new ones are planted to replace them. Legislation in many regions now mandates this practice for logging companies. However, it is critical to replant native species or a diverse mix of trees rather than monocultures like rubber trees, to maintain ecosystem health.

A low-impact variant, known as 'horse logging', uses horses to drag felled trees out, avoiding the disruption caused by heavy machinery.
