5.4 - Features of the Middle & Lower Stages of a River
The formation and characteristics of meanders in the middle stage
In the middle stage of a river's course, the river's energy shifts to lateral erosion. This results in a winding path with distinctive bends known as meanders.
Features of meanders and river dynamics
- Increased discharge - The river carries a significant volume of water per second.
- Winding pathway - The river develops large bends called meanders.
- Current variation - The fastest current flows on the outside of each meander bend, where the river channel is deeper.
- Formation of river cliffs - On the outer edge of a meander, the fast-moving water undercuts the bank, creating steep features known as river cliffs.
- Slower current inside - On the inner edge of the bend, the water moves more slowly and the channel is shallower.
- Deposition of point bars - Sandy sediment is deposited on the inner edge of the meander due to the slower flow, forming gently sloping features called point bars.
The development of ox-bow lakes from meander loops
As meanders become more pronounced over time, they can evolve into isolated water bodies known as ox-bow lakes.
Stages of ox-bow lake formation
- Pronounced meander loop - A meander bend becomes extremely curved, forming a wide loop with a narrow strip of land, or neck, separating the two sides of the river.
- Breakthrough during flood - When the river is in flood, it takes the shortest path by cutting straight through the narrow neck of land, creating a new channel.
- Isolation of the loop - The old meander loop is abandoned and cut off from the main river flow, leaving behind a crescent-shaped body of water known as an ox-bow lake.
Key features of the lower stage: flood plains, estuaries, and deltas
In the lower stage of a river's journey, it reaches its maximum discharge and velocity, with a wide cross-sectional area. This stage is characterised by features formed through both erosion and deposition.
Flood plains
Flood plains are the wide, flat valley floor adjacent to the river, which is regularly submerged during floods. When flooding occurs, sediment carried by the river is deposited on this land, often making it highly fertile.
Estuaries
Estuaries are wide, funnel-shaped river mouths, typically created where the lower reaches of a river are flooded due to changes in sea level.
Deltas
Deltas form at the river's mouth when the river deposits its sediment load faster than the sea can remove it. This happens in areas with minimal tidal action, such as the Mediterranean Sea near the Nile, or where the sediment load is exceptionally large, as seen with the Ganges in the Bay of Bengal.
