Rapid growth of the world's population
The global population has seen a dramatic rise, particularly over the last few centuries. This increase is not just about larger numbers of people but also about how quickly the growth rate has accelerated. The 20th century, in particular, witnessed a population explosion due to significant declines in death rates, leading to unprecedented growth.
Key trends in global population growth
- Historical perspective - For several centuries leading up to the 19th century, the global population stayed relatively stable, often below one billion. From the 19th century onwards, it began to rise sharply, surpassing six billion by the early 2000s.
- Population explosion - The dramatic drop in death rates during the 20th century, without a corresponding immediate drop in birth rates, caused a rapid surge in population numbers.
- Exponential increase - The curve of population growth became steeper over time, indicating that the rate of increase itself has sped up.
Factors influencing population growth
Population growth in any region or globally is determined by a balance of several key factors. These elements interact to either boost or reduce the number of people in a given area over time.
Components affecting population change
- Birth rate - The number of live births per thousand of the population per year. A higher birth rate contributes to population growth.
- Death rate - The number of deaths per thousand of the population per year. A lower death rate leads to an increase in population if births remain constant or rise.
- Natural increase or decrease - The difference between birth and death rates. If births exceed deaths, there is a natural increase; if deaths exceed births, there is a natural decrease.
- Migration - The movement of people into or out of an area. Positive net migration (more people moving in than out) increases population, while negative net migration (more leaving than arriving) decreases it.
The demographic transition model and its stages
The demographic transition model (DTM) outlines how a country's population changes over time through distinct stages. It reflects shifts in birth and death rates and their impact on total population, providing a framework to understand growth patterns across different societies. An additional fifth stage is often included to account for population decline in some regions.
Characteristics of each stage
- Stage 1: High fluctuating - Both birth and death rates are high, often due to limited healthcare and high disease prevalence, resulting in a stable, low population.
- Stage 2: Early expanding - Death rates drop due to improvements in healthcare and sanitation, while birth rates remain high, leading to rapid population growth.
- Stage 3: Late expanding - Birth rates begin to decline due to factors like urbanisation and access to education, especially for women, but population growth continues as death rates stay low.
- Stage 4: Low fluctuating - Both birth and death rates are low, balancing each other out, so the population remains high but stable.
- Stage 5: Declining - Birth rates fall below death rates, often due to ageing populations and changing societal values, resulting in a declining population.
Differences in population growth between LEDCs and MEDCs
Population growth patterns vary significantly between less economically developed countries (LEDCs) and more economically developed countries (MEDCs). These differences are often linked to stages in the demographic transition model and reflect economic, social, and healthcare disparities.
LEDCs (Less Economically Developed Countries)
Typically in Stages 2 or 3 of the DTM, these countries often experience high birth rates and falling death rates, leading to rapid population growth.
MEDCs (More Economically Developed Countries)
Generally in Stages 4 or 5 of the DTM, these countries have low birth and death rates. Population growth is minimal or negative.
