The composition and importance of soils
Soils are the foundation for plant growth, providing essential nutrients and support. They consist of a mixture of living and non-living materials, forming a complex medium that sustains life across various ecosystems.
Components that make up soils
- Minerals - Derived from weathered rocks, these appear as particles of silt, clay, and sand, forming the inorganic base of soil.
- Water - Supplied by rainfall, it is crucial for plant growth and helps dissolve nutrients for uptake.
- Air - Found in spaces between soil particles, it provides oxygen necessary for root respiration and microbial activity.
- Organic matter - Comprises decomposed remains of plants and animals, enriching the soil with nutrients.
- Living organisms - Includes creatures like worms, bacteria, and woodlice, which contribute to decomposition and soil aeration.
The link between soils, climate, vegetation, and rock types
Soils do not form in isolation; they are closely connected to the environmental conditions around them. Regions with similar climates, vegetation cover, and underlying rock types often develop comparable soil characteristics due to shared influences.
Factors influencing soil formation
- Climate - Temperature and rainfall patterns affect soil development by influencing weathering rates and organic matter decomposition.
- Vegetation - The type of plant cover impacts soil through the addition of organic material.
- Rock type - The parent material, or underlying rock, determines the mineral content and texture of the soil.
Key characteristics of soils
Soils vary widely in their properties, which influence their suitability for different types of vegetation and land use. These properties are defined by specific traits that can be observed and measured.
Main properties of soils
- Texture - Refers to the size of particles within the soil, such as sandy (coarse), silty (medium), or clay (fine), which affects water retention and drainage.
- Structure - Describes how soil particles are arranged, for example, crumbly (loose and porous) or blocky (compact clumps), impacting root penetration and aeration.
- Colour - Indicates mineral and organic content; dark black suggests high organic matter, blue hints at waterlogging and low oxygen, while red or brown points to iron compounds and good oxygenation.
- Acidity - Measures how acidic or alkaline the soil is, using the pH scale ranging from 1 to 14. Most soils fall between pH 5 (acidic) and pH 8 (alkaline), influencing nutrient availability for plants.
Soil profiles and layers in different ecosystems
A soil profile is a vertical cross-section that reveals distinct layers, or horizons, within the soil. These layers vary depending on the ecosystem, reflecting differences in climate, vegetation, and parent material.
Temperate grassland soil
Commonly found in regions like central Asia and the central plains of North America.
Characteristics:
- Surface layer - Covered with grass, contributing to a thick sod rich in organic matter.
- Upper layer - Dark brown with a crumb structure, ideal for root growth and water retention.
- Biological activity - High presence of worms, aiding in soil mixing and aeration.
- Base layer - Underlain by parent rock, providing the mineral foundation.
Temperate deciduous forest soil
Prevalent in areas such as the UK, western Europe, and the eastern parts of the USA.
Characteristics:
- Surface layer - Features deciduous trees with a thick layer of fallen leaves.
- Upper layer - Contains humus from decomposed organic matter, enriching the soil.
- Middle layer - Exhibits a crumb structure, supporting plant roots.
- Base layer - Rests on parent rock, supplying mineral content.
Coniferous forest soil
Found in northern regions of North America and Asia.
Characteristics:
- Surface layer - Dominated by coniferous trees with a covering of pine needles.
- Upper layer - Has a thick, acidic humus layer due to slow decomposition in cold conditions.
- Middle layers - Include a sandy layer, followed by a waterlogged zone often appearing blue-grey, and a layer of clays.
- Base layer - Underlain by parent rock, contributing to the soil's mineral makeup.
Tropical rainforest soil
Common in regions like South America and southern Asia.
Characteristics:
- Surface layer - Covered by dense trees with a thick humus layer from rapid decomposition in humid conditions.
- Middle layer - Characterised by a deep reddish-orange clay layer, often due to intense weathering and iron oxide presence.
- Base layer - Sits atop parent rock, which provides the foundational minerals.
