The global nature of pollution
Pollution refers to any harmful alteration to the environment, often resulting from human activities. It is a worldwide issue that transcends borders, affecting regions far from the original source of contamination due to natural processes like wind and water currents.
Characteristics of pollution as a global problem
- Worldwide impact - Pollution generated in one area can influence distant locations. For instance, radioactive particles from a nuclear accident in Eastern Europe have been detected in livestock in Western Europe.
- Industrial and transportation sources - Activities such as industrial processes, transportation, and farming contribute significantly to environmental damage.
- Other forms of pollution - Visual pollution arises from unsightly structures like landfills or quarries, while noise pollution is often linked to aircraft and machinery.
Common types of pollution and their sources
Pollution manifests in various forms, each stemming from specific human activities and impacting different aspects of the environment.
Air pollution
Air pollution arises from the combustion of fossil fuels in industries, homes, and vehicles, releasing harmful gases such as sulphur dioxide and carbon monoxide, along with smoke and fine particles. Agricultural sprays and chemicals also contribute to airborne contamination.
Water pollution
River pollution:
- Results from the discharge of untreated industrial waste and sewage into waterways.
- Agricultural run-off, including fertilisers and pesticides, further contaminates rivers.
- Thermal pollution occurs when power plants release heated water into aquatic systems.
Sea pollution:
- Primarily caused by industrial effluents, oil spills from tankers or rigs, and untreated sewage dumped into oceans.
- Household waste is also occasionally discarded into marine environments, adding to the problem.
Land pollution
