Compass points are essential for giving directions, describing the flow of rivers, or identifying the position of features on a map.
Cardinal directions and mnemonics
There are four primary directions: North (top of the map), South (bottom of the map), East (right side of the map), and West (left side of the map). A helpful mnemonic to remember these is "Never Eat Soggy Wheat," where each word starts with the same letter as the corresponding direction (North, East, South, West).
Using map scales to calculate distances
Maps are drawn to a specific scale, meaning they represent real-world distances in a reduced form. Understanding the scale allows accurate measurement of distances between features on the map.
How to measure distances using a map scale
A scale such as 1:50,000 indicates that 1 unit on the map equals 50,000 units in real life.
Steps for measurement:
- Use a ruler to measure the distance between two points on the map in centimetres.
- Align the measured distance with the map's scale bar to convert it to kilometres.
Example calculation:
- If two landmarks are 3.4 cm apart on a map, align the ruler with the scale bar.
- This shows the real-world distance as 1.7 km.
Tip for curved features: For roads or rivers, lay a piece of string along the feature's path, then measure the string against the scale bar to find the distance.
Locating places with four-figure and six-figure grid references
Grid references are numerical coordinates used to pinpoint locations on Ordnance Survey maps. They come in two forms: four-figure for general areas and six-figure for precise spots.
Four-figure grid references
Four-figure grid references identify a specific grid square on the map.
Steps to determine a four-figure reference:
- Locate the feature within a grid square.
- Note the Eastings value (horizontal axis) from the left edge of the square.
- Note the Northings value (vertical axis) from the bottom edge of the square.
- Combine the two values, Eastings first, to form the reference.
For a feature in a square with Eastings 88 and Northings 47, the four-figure grid reference is 8847.
Six-figure grid references
Six-figure grid references provide a more exact location within a grid square.
Steps to determine a six-figure reference:
- Start with the four-figure reference by finding the Eastings and Northings.
- Imagine the grid square divided into tenths (or use a ruler for accuracy).
- Estimate or measure how many tenths across (Eastings) and up (Northings) the feature is within the square.
- Add these tenths as single digits to the initial values to form a six-figure reference.
If a feature is in the square with Eastings 88 and Northings 47, and it lies 5 tenths across and 2 tenths up within the square, the six-figure reference is 885472.
Interpreting relief through contour lines and height indicators
Relief refers to the shape and height of the land as shown on Ordnance Survey maps. Contour lines and other markers help visualise whether an area is flat, hilly, or steep.
Features indicating land height and slope
Contour lines:
- These are orange lines connecting points of equal height above sea level.
- Closely spaced contours indicate a steep slope.
- Widely spaced contours suggest a gentle slope or flat terrain.
- Many contour lines mean a hilly or mountainous area; few lines indicate low-lying, flatter land.
Other height indicators:
- Spot heights - Marked as dots with a number, these show the exact height of a specific location.
- Trigonometrical points (trig points) - Represented by a blue triangle with a height value, these mark the highest point in an area (in metres).
Techniques for sketching maps accurately
Sketching maps involves creating a simplified, hand-drawn version of an Ordnance Survey map. This skill is useful for highlighting key features or planning routes while maintaining accuracy.
Steps for effective map sketching
- Focus on shape and position - Ensure the main features (like lakes or roads) are drawn in the correct shape and placed accurately within the grid squares.
- Measure key points - Use a ruler to check where important features cross grid lines, ensuring they are positioned correctly in the sketch.
- Maintain proportions - Pay attention to the width of roads or the size of features relative to the grid to keep the sketch proportional.
- Simplify details - Include only the most relevant elements, avoiding unnecessary clutter while retaining the map's essential layout.
