- Analysis and interpretation - Collecting reliable data allows for meaningful analysis to draw conclusions about geographical phenomena.

Primary data sources and collection methods
Primary data is information collected directly by the researcher through personal observation or interaction.
Methods of collecting primary data
- Questionnaires - Involves asking a series of questions to gather people's views on topics like local amenities or transport. These can be distributed in person at public places, to classmates, or via mail.
- Traffic counts - Entails recording the number of vehicles passing a specific point on a road over a set time, often categorising them into types such as cars, vans, motorbikes, and buses.
- Pedestrian counts - Requires standing at a fixed location, such as near a shopping centre or park entrance, to count the number of people walking past within a given timeframe.
- Land use surveys - Involves studying a map or visiting an area to categorise how land is used, such as for residential, commercial, or recreational purposes, often using colour-coded maps to represent different uses.
- Environmental quality surveys - Focuses on evaluating the condition of an environment by rating factors like cleanliness or noise levels. For example, an area's litter level might be scored from 1 (very littered) to 5 (very clean).
Secondary data sources and their uses
Secondary data is information that has already been collected by someone else and is accessed through various existing resources.
Common sources of secondary data
- Internet resources - Includes websites like government portals offering census data, which is a national survey conducted every decade to capture detailed population information in the UK.
- Library materials - Encompasses books, journals, and records such as birth or death registers that provide historical or thematic insights for a geographical study.
- Newspaper content - Features articles or data in local or national papers, particularly useful for projects focusing on specific community issues or events.
- Maps and atlases - Includes tools like Ordnance Survey® maps, street maps, or global atlases to identify geographical features or plan field studies.

Understanding the distinction between primary and secondary data is crucial for selecting the most appropriate source for a geographical enquiry. Each type has unique characteristics that influence how it is collected and applied.
