The concept of localisation in the brain
Localisation refers to the idea that specific functions or behaviours are associated with particular areas of the brain.
The brain consists of two hemispheres connected by the corpus callosum, a bundle of nerve fibres that enables communication between the hemispheres. Different parts of these hemispheres have specific functions, and certain tasks or behaviours are carried out in designated brain regions.
Hemispheric lateralisation and the functions of the left and right hemispheres
Hemispheric lateralisation describes the tendency for certain neural functions or cognitive processes to be specialised to one hemisphere of the brain. Most brains are contralateral, meaning the right hemisphere controls the left side of the body and vice versa.
Functions of the left hemisphere
- Language processing - For the majority of individuals, language skills, including speaking and comprehension, are primarily handled by the left hemisphere. Damage to this area, such as from a stroke, often results in speech difficulties.
- Detail focus - This hemisphere is adept at processing fine details in visual information.
Functions of the right hemisphere
- Emotion recognition - The right hemisphere is crucial for interpreting emotions in others.
- Spatial awareness - It manages spatial information, helping individuals understand the positioning of objects in relation to each other within their visual field.
