The concept and biological basis of empathy
Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others, a crucial skill for social interaction. It allows individuals to connect emotionally with others by recognising and experiencing their emotions, often through observing their behaviour.
Foundations of empathy
- Role of mirror neurons - These are specialised brain cells that activate both when performing an action and when observing someone else doing the same. They are believed to underpin empathy by mimicking the emotional states of others in the observer's brain.
- Non-verbal communication (NVC) - This refers to conveying messages without words, using elements like tone of voice, facial expressions, gestures, and body posture. NVC plays a key role in empathy as it allows individuals to pick up on emotions across different cultures, regardless of language barriers.
The development of theory of mind and its role in empathy
Theory of mind (ToM) is the understanding that others have thoughts, feelings, and perspectives different from one's own. It is a foundational aspect of empathy, enabling individuals to interpret and predict others' behaviours based on their mental states.
Stages in the development of theory of mind
- Egocentric thinking in early childhood - From birth, children view the world solely from their own perspective, assuming their experiences are shared by everyone.
- Emergence of shared attention mechanism (SAM) - Between 9 and 18 months, infants develop the ability to focus on the same object or event as another person, marking an early form of shared understanding.
- Development of full ToM - By around four years of age, children begin to realise that others have distinct thoughts and feelings, moving beyond egocentric thinking.
- Implications of ToM - With ToM comes the capacity to deceive or manipulate others by concealing true emotions or intentions, as children understand that others may not know what they know.
Investigating ToM
False belief tasks are experimental scenarios used to assess ToM. Children observe a situation, such as an object being hidden, and are asked to predict a character's actions based on what the character believes, rather than what the child knows to be true. Success indicates ToM, while failure suggests an egocentric viewpoint.

- Method - Conducted false belief tasks with children aged 4 to 9, involving a story where a toy was hidden and a character was unaware of its new location.
- Results - Most children aged 7 to 9 could predict the character's actions based on the character's false belief, while most 4-year-olds relied on their own knowledge, failing the task.
- Conclusions - ToM typically develops between 4 and 7 years of age, as younger children struggle to separate their perspective from others'.

- Explanation for autism - A lack of ToM offers a potential reason for the social difficulties experienced by individuals with autism, a developmental condition marked by challenges in communication and relationship-building. Difficulty in understanding others' thoughts may underlie struggles with empathy.

- Beyond false belief tasks - Passing false belief tasks may not fully capture ToM. Children under two, who typically fail these tasks, can engage in pretend play and understand others' pretending, suggesting some early empathetic or perspective-taking ability.

- Therapeutic strategies - Given that individuals with autism often show reduced empathy due to limited ToM, interventions focus on fostering empathy by helping them experience and interpret others' feelings and intentions through structured activities and social skills training.
