Desertification refers to the process where fertile land in arid and semi-arid regions degrades into desert-like conditions. This phenomenon poses a significant global challenge, affecting approximately 25% of the world's land area and threatening the livelihoods of around 16% of the global population. It primarily occurs in fragile environments where the land is over-exploited.
The causes of desertification in arid and semi-arid areas
Desertification is driven by human activities that over-exploit vulnerable land in dry regions. These activities disrupt the delicate balance of ecosystems, accelerating the degradation of soil and vegetation.
Main causes of desertification
- Overgrazing - Excessive grazing by livestock depletes vegetation cover, exposing soil to erosion and reducing its ability to retain moisture.
- Overcultivation - Intensive farming without adequate soil management exhausts nutrients, leading to diminished fertility and increased vulnerability to erosion.
- Deforestation - The removal of trees for fuel or to clear land for agriculture eliminates natural barriers that protect soil from wind and water erosion, while also reducing soil fertility.

- Better grazing management - Smaller herds and rotating grazing across larger areas help prevent soil degradation.
- Challenges - Vaccination success can inadvertently increase herd sizes due to higher survival rates. Additionally, population pressures often hinder efforts to reduce livestock numbers or expand grazing areas.
Overcultivation prevention
- Fertiliser use - Applying fertilisers can significantly boost crop yields, reducing the need to cultivate additional land.
- Improved crop varieties - Introducing high-yielding, drought-resistant crops or new varieties of traditional crops can enhance productivity in harsh conditions.
