These include cold and high-altitude areas as well as hot, arid regions. Despite their inhospitability, these environments often present unique opportunities for settlement and economic activities.

- Cold and high-altitude environments - Found in high latitudes near the North and South Poles, and in high mountainous regions. Key areas include:
- Polar and periglacial zones across northern North America and Eurasia.
- High mountain ranges such as the Himalayas in Asia, the Andes in South America, and the Rockies in North America.
- Hot, arid environments - Cover approximately one-third of the Earth's surface, primarily located around the tropics. Significant regions include:
- North Africa (e.g., the Sahara Desert), the Middle East, central Australia, and parts of the Americas.
- Factors influencing desert locations - Several geographical and climatic factors determine the placement of deserts:
- Subtropical high-pressure zones that limit rainfall, as seen in the Sahara.
- Continentality, where inland areas are far from moisture sources, such as central Sahara regions.
- Rain-shadow effects, where mountains block moist air, evident in Patagonia, South America.
- Proximity to cold ocean currents that reduce air moisture, contributing to deserts like the Namib in southern Africa.
